Mailing cards and letters

Um, do mailboxes exist here or do we always have to make a trip to the post office to mail simple letters and cards?

Also, my new flat in Causeway (old Chinese walk-up) has only one mailbox for the four tenants o nmy floor. Is this common and trustworthy, or do I need to invest in renting a PO Box?

Yes there are mailboxes, and the locations are listed on the HKPO website. As for your home situation I don't think that's common practice. Have you soken to the other residents to find out what they do? A lot of ex pats in HK would use their office address for important correspondence (altho' clearly in some cases you have to give your residential address). The ultimate in security (if you are concerned or if there is a problem) would be to get a PO Box. I've done that in the past when alone and travelling a lot.

Post boxes here are green and can be found on many streets. For weighing your letters for airmail though, you really need to go to the Post office. We also have a mobile post van that comes once a week (it used to come twice which was much better).
