Which electric breast pump?

I am looking at buying an electri pump for my second-born. I used a manual pump with my first-born (for part-time working), but found it too slow because I had time pressure for pumping at work.

One advantage of the manual pump was that I could put the whole thing (sealed) in the fridge all day, use it more than once, and not have to wash it until I got home. I have zero access at work to hygienic washing facilities - only a washroom with cold water - and no time for cleaning and sterilising anyway.

Does anybody know of a double electric pump where I can put the essential parts (which will come into contact with milk) in the fridge for second use without cleaning? OR, failing that, for which spares of the essential parts can be purchased inexpensively?

It would also be ideal to find an electric pump which has a manual function as well, in case of breakdown or I can't find anywhere private to pump - not sure if that exists!

I have an Ameda - I love it. It's not too big and it pumps pretty efficiently. you can also buy spare "boob" parts- and it's only three small parts and a bottle which needs to be kept clean between uses.

The nice thing about the ameda is that the tube doesn't need to be cleaned, so you just need spare "booby" parts.

Alternatively, Miltons sterilizing tablets (never used them) are supposed to be quite good. Quite a few posters on here use them for travel - but i'm not sure about using them regularly every day.

Thanks hkchoichoi. Am I right to think this is not available in HK? I'm worried that might be a problem if anything malfunctions, to try to obtain spare parts from overseas. Also what do you do about the US voltage power cable?

available in HK.

Also look around to see what other pumps are available. Most allow you to disconnect various parts of washing and cleanup...I just think that the Ameda is more compact than others. there is another poster that loves her Avent double and there are also quite a few fans of the medela.

Thanks everyone.

hkchoichoi, the HK site (Homecare Medical) you linked me to does not seem to have the Purely Yours, only other Ameda pumps.

crj, I thought the Medela PIS has milk going through tubes - doesn't that make it hard to stow in the fridge? Would I have to take a spare set of tubes to work in order to use twice?

The Medala pumps are all the same in terms of where the milk goes - it goes from the 'shield' thing on your breast, to the bottle.

The difference is the 'engine' - they vary from hand pump, to hand held electric, to machine. The machine ones have a 'tube' but that is transmits the suction to the pump - not the milk.

Meridien Hong Kong Ltd. 2328-2662 sell the pump in style hospital strength electric breast pump. You would need to purchase an extra set of bottles for each pumping session and can then store the milk in collection bottles. The pump is AC only.

Mixing freshly pumped breastmilk (warm) with chilled breastmilk is not recommended. Breastmilk can be mixed together from separate expressing sessions as long as they are both chilled first.

Wanted to share my discovery from phoning the link provided by hkcc to Homecare Medical (2402 2565), that the Ameda Lactoline they sell (for HK$1380) is the same as the Purely Yours, just the name given to the same product for the Asian and European market.

Matilda, I would like to ask you a question if you don't mind. If I put the pump (or part thereof) into the fridge and use again without washing, but express into a clean bottle, there would still be some chilled milk on the pump which would mix with the fresh warm milk. Would you say that is "not recommended" to the extent that it is not safe to give to my baby? (Therefore, if I am unable to wash my pump, I should either take two pumps to work, or pump and dump.) Or does it simply reduce the shelf life of the milk collected in this manner from the second pumping session? Thanks.

when I ordered my Ameda from the US - I got enough parts basically for two separate pumping sessions. (You get the parts in order to pump two breasts at once, or you could use one, pump both breasts and then the second one (it would be clean) and pump the other two breasts. It's not big at all - so you would easily be able to carry the spare parts back and forth.

a word of note though, there is this small, rubber part (white that basically filters the milk into the bottle) that can easily rip if you aren't careful - so you should buy extra of those - although this time around, pumping twice a day, I still haven't ripped one.

you should also look at the medela which a lot of people really love - and another poster on her says that the Avent is also really great.

hk choe do you need to sterlize the 'booby' parts? Did you find that the silicone insert needed replacing as well?

for the ameda - you need to sterilize four parts - the small white fingertip thingy, the bottle, the air valve and the actually thing over your boob. It's four parts total, but you get enough for two sets. I'm not sure which silicone insert you are talking about, but the only thing I've had problems with is the white fingertip thing. I bought extra of those.
