Why does HK's gym feel so much like a "pick-up" place? I didn't feel that people, including the personal trainers, flirted or gossiped so much back in Canada (and in the UK where I used to work).

gabb, i think all gyms in HK have this kind of reputaion. Many people go purely for this reason. Dont be offended by it, instead try to take it as a compliment if your being talked to (providing they are being polite and respectfull) but if you feel someone is being invasive just let thm know your not interested and get on with your workout. I dont think it can be avoided in the HK gyms or in many gyms around the world.

OK...back in Canada, some of the gym staff did show a liking in me, yet they were still VERY POLITE AND **************DISCREET*************************** I knew because they were always complimenting how beautiful my name is (Gabb isn't my true name), and the way they said this, their tone of voice, and their expression suggested that they liked me. But when they found that I didn't "flirt back" (I politely thanked them without showing interest), they stopped their compliments but continued to treat me nicely and friendily to make me feel at home in their club.

Unfortunately discretion and subtlety are not strong features in HK but I am sure you will manage. I have many gal pals who are always getting hit on at the gym and as anoying as it may be in some way the attention is noted.

How do they react?
And how, from a man's point of view, would you suggest me to react? I'm finding this really annoying because I hate to be the centre of attention! I go to a gym to exercise, not to get a man and definitely NOT a personal trainer boyfriend!

HAHA.....sorry to laugh but it is a little amusing. If being polite does not work then you may just have to be direct. It depends on the aproach they use. If they are using the 'giving advice on the exercise' routine I would just tell them. "thanks for the advice but I am ok doing it on my own". Women have good intuition when it comes to mens intentions and usually most men use the same lame lines to interact so it should be pretty easy for you to politely dismiss them. If they dont take the polite gestures then just be straight up and tell them you would prefer not to be interupted while your working out. You could do this with an apology first if your concerned about sounding offish or rude but the guy will only take it in a negative way if he is insecure and that is not really your problem. Just say thanks and you have to finish your workout quickly before you have to go meet your husband. FYI Most of the women I see at the gym doing nothing are the women. Part of the problem is the HK ladies inability to properly recognize and take a compliment.

Hong Kong is a place where everything and anything can happen. I have since joined resorted to the gym in my clubhouse. Enjoy it much more than the chains!
