Unfortunately in HK there are really only one or two decent artists and only 2 that i know of have the propper sterilization equipment. I still invite interenational artist to HK a few times a year.

I had a tattoo done by Joe several years ago as did several of my clients, many of them had to be redone by other artists including mine so unless she has drasticaly improved i would be carefull.

I do a bit of work with Sze (a local female tattoo artist) who has a studio in Central. I like her work and the fact that she is a good freehand artist.

There is another new studio i have heard about in TST but i havent checked it out yet. I plan to go over and have a look in the next couple of weeks.

I would be happy to advise and answer any questions on tattooing if you want to send me a pm.

Jo did my first tattoo on Valentine's Day 2004. A beautiful swathe of peach blossom curving around my curves. It recieves great compliments wherever it goes. It's art. And was so reasonably priced - around the same as a good haircut (always found at Hippfish :) Go Jo! :)

I have two tattoos by Jo. The first work she did for me was to an existing tribal design. The original artist had basically "slapped on" the ink, without taking into account the interaction between the art and my body. Jo found a way to improve the original design, allowing it to flow in harmony with my musculature. The resulting work was dramatic.

The second piece she did was a unique design based on the Chinese zodiac. During the development of this tattoo I was really impressed with Jo's commitment to ensuring this was the right tattoo for me. Now that it's done I'm amazed at the quality and precision of the work.

On top of her talent, Jo also brings a level of personal interaction that is rare and refreshing.

I would have to agree that professionalism is key to a good tattooist.

My first one was done by an artist in Canada that my friend used. He was good. I never really felt all that comfy with him.

Joanne did my second one. I felt completely at ease with her and confident that she would do a stellar job...and she did.

If you do not feel comfy with your artist, you will possibly not enjoy the end results.

I have to agree that Joanne is an amazing tattoo artist, I have a full back job done in Australia as well as a large leg piece done in Japan, and the large tribal design that Joanne did for me in October of last year is a credit to her work. She spent a lot of time firstly discussing with me my idea and drew and adapted on paper and then on my leg the design, taking into account the curves of my leg, before using the needle. No other tattoist I have worked with has taken such time to strive for excellence. She radiates a postive energy and I felt comforable throughout the experience. My lack of pain during the process is also a testament to her skill with the needle. She is an artist who takes pride in her work and I would recommend her any time. I look forward to working with her in the future.

hi, this is jo. firstly thanks everyone!! gotta love ya!!

there are really so many fantastic tattoo artists in hk these days, the industry has boomed in the past 10 years. I have been tattooing here for 6. Kin, rocks the surfing world with his increadible designs. Matthew at Chynese tattoo, is well, one of the best chinese designers i know. Theres John and his intricate fine line at tample...as well as apprentices Jomain and Shing..Boon, as well, in causeway bay, but he is the RADICAL end of the market, if you want something done to really grate your parents..hahaha...sze has some beautiful little contemporary designs. Julia and her husband in tst, she's doing american new school and he does piercing and they are having a lot of fun!! there's Gabe who's been here for yonks and there is more I don't know of...and well, there's me...:) i have work done by Matthew, Kin, Jomain and John since arriving in hk...i'm looking out for Shing when he is ready...

As for sterilization; it is true we have no laws here governing us..but it's ok if you do what you need to. I set my standard to the Universal Standard used in studios and laborotories around the world. THIS IS, 120*C for 20 minutes. This heat can be achieved in a number of different vessels> you can do it in your kitchen oven if you want!! The reason WHY everyone uses the HEAT and PRESSURE method (ie steam cooker) is because the steam gives you better conductivity than dry heat. (it moves the heat around your equipment) Anyone who is sterilising properly is using an indicator strip on the outside of the packaging. The indicator will CHANGE colour after it has reached a certain temperature for a certain ammount of time> I have experimented with this. NB most vessels take atleast 15-20 minutes to reach 120*C, so make sure your total cooking time is 20+20 minutes....All equipment should be scrubbed before and after sterilising. All of my eqipment has been sterilised twice before it is used again, i sterilise on the spot, to avoid contamination during the drying cycle- which often means you, the customer, must wait for the tubes to cool down before I start to work. i also sterilise old needles before i bin them in a sharps container for incineration- to save new colonies of bacteria growing in the sharps container. Really, your biggest fear in HK should be the FUNGAL activity growing everywhere. It is one of the most resiliant to sterilisation. We are lucky, we don't have really flesh eating fungas in HK- but there is in some parts of Australia and the US.

OK? I think i have said enough. Asia Expat, keep up the good work- bye for now.

I have just had my Tattoo re-done by Joanne. She was great, very willing to accomadate me and talked through what she was going to do. She was very careful about keeping everything sterile and my back looks amazing. I felt really comfortable with her doing the tattoo and walked out really really happy. Thanks a lot Joanne!!!

Rocky star- it depends on what part of the body the tattoo is for. If there is more skin or fat then it wont be as painful but i had part over my spine so there was some pain factor. Make sure smeone is there to keep talking cos it helps distract you. As for price, my tattoo was a touch up and i think the minimum you pay is $500 but it depends on who you go to and the quality of work they do. This is something you will have for the rest of your life so are you willing to get a cheaper deal but then get a tattoo you wont want to show off.

I must aggree, Jo is an incredible artist and very professional. I had done a cover up that most tattoo artists had said impossible to cover--But through Jo's artistic skills it was done and this tat had done me proud. she is really very good since for her. she does custom work and you wont refreat going to her---her price is slightly higher in conparasion but for what its worth. its permantant and its worth every last cent. honestly.

i dont think im expensive1!! ha ha..:) all prices are negotiable anyway, within reason...of course!! :) most artists will agree that if you price shop for tattoo, you will end up paying double when you must find someone else to fix your cheap mistake!! take care now!

Oh, and contrary to popular belief... I don't mainly do old school tattoos. I do a fair amount of new school...but we also do plenty of everything, ranging from tribal, script, fantasy, black & grey...the list goes on. Lately I've been overwhelmed with Jap work at the shop. We have an ultrasonic cleaner and an autoclave, all needles are single sealed single use. Anyone who wants to pop by and have a look is more than welcome. We take walk in's too.
