Hi

All things equal, is it cheaper to buy a RT tix for USA-HKG (starting from the USA)?

Or, buy a one way tix, then do RT tix for HKG-USA (starting from HK)?

I know that usually, cheapest tix have 6-month timeframe. So excluding that factor (and assuming I go back 2x/year).

Thanks for your advice!!!!

---more details below---

EXAMPLE

I can buy one-way Cathay Pacific from USA to HKG for $530 and in the future use HKG as my starting RT point.

Or, I can buy RT Cathay Pacific from USA to HKG for $830. No penalties to change date, but the tix has to be used within 6 months of the first leg of trip.

Howdy... asked the same question myself when I first moved here from the US. Based on my research, it's cheaper for roundtrip originating/departing from Hong Kong. This COULD be based on route though.

I'm in China (not HK) but I think it's cheaper from here. You can check prices on zuji.com On the other hand, it never hurts to already have in hand the return leg of your ticket "home." Security blanket.

I am from the US.

cheapest flights are not direct - one stopover - found them the cheapest routed through Taiwan and Seoul. (which is crazy because direct tickets from Seoul to the US are exhorbitant. Also generally seems cheaper to fly starting from HK as a one way ticket, as aquarious points out is expensive.

Buying Business Class, best to buy in Bangkok or Manila and start your flight there. Oasis Air should start flying to Oakland around June. Their rates should be similar to those of their route to Gatwick in the UK. About HK$3,000 inc. taxes Economy and HK$15,000 Business Class.

I to fly between the USA and HK - and have found buying a ticket from Hk to USA is cheaper. I have also learnt that US Carriers are cheaper than Cathay Pacific and JAL and Korean Airlines, China Airlines and Air China all have cheap partner agreements with US carriers or offer competive rates.

When flying to South America, Central America and Mexico I have learnt at times it is cheaper to fly to Bangkok, Thailand then buy a ticket than starting from HK.
