No need to panic. Ask a pharmacist to take a look at them as these under-valued professionals are (or should be) trained and experienced to recognise minor problems like these and can sell you over-the-counter remedies to quickly treat them.

could possibly also be heavy metal poisoning. (lead and what not.) If your pharmacist is not helpful, start with your GP.

Thanks thames and HKchoichoi for your replies. Will go to the pharmacy.

How is metal poisoning caused, hkchoichoi?Anything to do with nail paints?

It seems to be spreading so makes me more scared.

Thanks once again

well -

most nail polish shouldn't have any problems.

Do you get frequent pedicures? Perhaps you caught a fungus there - hygiene can be a bit tricky in those places. If you dont' see the same lines on your fingernails, probably not a high probably of metal poisoning.

also can be a sign of some trauma - are your shoes too tight? are you running in too tight shoes?

You seem very concerned so I don't understand your reluctance to seek help from a doctor. See one today and your mind will be at ease.

The reply to your question is

podiatrist or chiropodist is the name of the specialist who deals with foot-related problems. There are several in Central and around and about. I would suggest that you go onto the Medical forum, type in Podiatrist or Chiropodist into the search function, and scan the information for names, addresses and telephone numbers.

I wouldn't panic as it doesn't sound life-threatening.

Thanks once again to all the people who have taken out time to reply.

To claire: Yes i know the best thing is to visit a doctor as soon as I can. most logical but unfortunately, its the end of the month and some more important expenses of the children are pending so thought if i can atleast know the reason to ease my mind , I plan to visit the doctor in November.

Juicer,

I know its not life threatning but if it can be nipped in the bud, it will be good.My panic button was pressed when i saw it spreading to almost all the nails. Will surely see the chiropodist in the medical section.

HKchoichoi,

Well i dont thing my shoes are tight. may be caught infection during the pedicures.

thanks once again

If it's an infection you need antibotics and, really, an infected toenail is not something to be put off. You might have to queue for ages, but how about a trip to the A&E at your local hospital. If you have a HK ID card, it won't be so expensive. Or a visit to the General Outpatients' Dept at Central Hospital between 8am and 10pm (Mon-Sat) is just $150.

I had similar symptoms when I left my nail polish on for too long without removing/reapplying it - could it be this?

Otherwise, it may be a type of fungus that gets under the nails. I had this for quite a while before I got it treated, so don't worry about leaving it for a little while. It is quite common, but annoying to treat because the most effective treatment involves taking tablets every day for 3 months. The medication is called Lamisil, and it really does work, so if this is what you have get the doctor to give you this medication and keep taking it. Don't be fobbed off with some cream or liquid as these are not effective for nail fungus.

Lamisil tablets are a prescription drug because they have side effects, liver damage and so on. If (and I say if because nobody on this thread is a specialist as far as I'm aware) it's a funfgal infection, there are creams and liquids to treat it in the first instance but I would suggest that you let a specialist advise you instead of following the unqualified advice that you're receiving here. Likewise the talk of taking anti-biotics if it's an infection - who knows what it is without specialist medical knowledge and examination? Don't play guessing games and treat it for something you think it might be. It might be one of several things. Who do you think might know?
