there should be several open source / free software alternatives, that was just an example. just google "powerpoint to AVI" for other options. its a common task.
as for blogs, i wouldnt reccomend using a free blog site if you are going to be relying on the presentation and reliability of the media.
what sort of media are you looking to host? just media or more text content, company info etc?
there are so many different options but it all comes down to how you want to present them. there are better options than just blog sites.
