Yes, it is significantly cheaper. It is possible to turn up and book a flight, but you can also use some of the smaller travel agencies in Hong Kong. I'd personally stay away from CTS, because they tend to be more expensive.

Also, I saw that the conductor of the Shenzhen airport bus can help to book tickets while en route to the airport. (But I don't know if they speak English)
