I am a 28 year old Austraian/British/South African, I have lived in Hong Kong for 1year 5 months and I don't work, don't have kids and don't plan on working, meeting people here is somewhat difficult and the people you do meet end up moving away, very sad!!! Is anyone out there who is in the same position as me and instead of going out at night times and getting totally hammered, which I do like from time to time, instead would like to catch up for coffees or a glass of wine during the day, posibly do something else, what ever I am up for anything!

Geav, I'm assuming that you are female and your husband is working. Is there any particular reason why you don't plan on working - no need, or too hard to find a job in your field (this is my situation).

What are your interests? There are various places that you can do volunteer work, if that interests you. There's always English tutoring...

The YWCA runs lots of classes on crafts, cooking, hiking, all kinds of things like that, mostly in the daytime. There are other groups like the Australian Association of Hong Kong that have activities.

I had trouble getting work when I came here, so I took the opportunity to do some further study and am about to complete a Masters degree via distance education. Not very social, but it has kept my mind busy.

Most of the people I have met have been through my husband's work - his colleagues and their wives. Some of the women work but many don't, so we occasionally get together, either in the daytime or evenings.

That's the main things I can think of off the top of my head, have a look in HK magazine and you may find some more ideas of things to do.

Have you tried the coffee mornings/lunches/social gatherings/hikes/book clubs run by the Aust assoc or the American Womens Assoc? Lots of women in the same position as you who are keen to meet new friends. You might find yourself too busy rather than bored!

Hkkm,

Can you please send me a PM about your Master's degree through distance learning. I have been interested for quite a while but don't know where to look...

Thanks!

I am a British Asian who has only just moved to Hong Kong a few weeks ago and am finding it hard to meet people too. I tend to find myself shopping for most of the day but plan on looking for work in my field soon, just to relieve the boredom.

What about women who do work? I was looking on the AWA website and most the activities occur Mon-Thurs throughout the day...

Anyone know of any weekend groups?

The Aust Assoc has weekend activities and so does the YWCA ESD.
