Hi
We want to go to the snow during Christmas and can't decide where to go (how do you choose?) - traveling time to Europe and then mountains seems long, never been to the US / Canada for skiing, not sure what sort skiing and fun in the snow to expect in Japan or Korea. Any recommendations for a cosy, maybe even romantic, winter break? We don't want anything crazy, just a cozy place where hubby and I can enjoy the snow and some together time at Christmas.
Much thanks!

Hello,
I have visited in past over 30 or so resorts in the Alps and generally spend 3-5 weeks in a season on skis. There are several good destinations in Europe close Airports like Geneve or Insbruck meaning max 1.5 hrs travel time from the Airport. This is important as your travel time in the plain is allready quite long. Close to Geneve I would mention for example Morzine(French side) where there is over 650 km of slopes for all levels. Close to Insbuck AIrport you can find for ex Ischgl which is very popular these days and good slopes too. Neither one of these places are in the expensive destination cathegory. There are also plenty of other smaller very good resorts close to these airports. 1 good site You can visit is www.snow-forecast.com. You can also see the forecasts there which are allways important. Please note this year snow is late but like last year situation can change in couple of days so presently would recommend higher altitude resorts.

Innsbruck is awesome, but Japan is closer with some of the best spa or onsen. A perfect thing to end the day.
I think Xpat is recommending Niseko.

Korea - Dragon Valley is the best. About 3 1/2 hr. bus from Seoul.
Japan - Niseko(Hokkaido) is wonderful. Extremely romantic and best powder snow in the world. Another advantage in Niseko is you can get by English where as in many places in Japan, you are stuck unless you know Japanese.

dragon valley in Korea - CRAZY crowded with people, especially during the winter holidays. Wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for a "romantic" setting.
