We have booked a flight to Auckland at mid of December. Can anyone advise on a good route - must see's/do's?
I've been doing a lot of reading but am not sure what is the best to do in the three weeks that we've got.
I think Bay of Island is nice to do especially with the kids, and Rotorua, but what about going to the South Island too? Flying to Christchurch, driving up north or down to Queens town.
Is there anybody who has experience traveling through NZ with children of the same age (1,3 & 5y.)?

Hire a car and start driving stopping at Whitcoulls at the airport to pick up a good map, lonely planet and a Jasons motel book. Apex Car Rentals are good - cheaper than Avis etc. Highly recommend Bella Vista motels and reasonably priced places to stay. If you are there from Xma you need to book ahead becasue the whole country goes on holiday. You can travel a long way in 3 weeks. If you can't do it all the South Island is the most New Zealand. Drive from Christchurch down through the lakes to Queenstown and up the west coast crossing to the hot spas at Hamner Springs and back to Chch via the Whale Watching in Kaikoura.

If you have kids, make sure you spend some time in Rotorua and Taupo as great things for families to see and do, some good websites for accomodation is aatravel and jasons websites, also check out www.ratestogo.co.nz and www.wotif.co.nz for last minute bookings, but December is heavily booked in the holiday areas. Bay of Islands is a stunning part of the country and again lots to do and see for families. Enjoy
