Is HK Marriage Recognised in Europe?

I am considering marrying my Taiwanese girlfriend in Hong Kong, perhaps in the spring. I am a resident (non-permanent) and have a HK ID card. I am British.

Our plan is to move back to Europe next year.

Once married, will my girlfriend be able to live and work in Hong Kong during 2007? - if so does she have to apply for a 'dependent's visa' at the immigration department in HK?

Will our HK marriage be recognised in Britain/the EU? (And is the certificate in English, even?)

Does anyone know if I work in an EU country e.g. Spain or Italy then can my Taiwanese wife come to live with me there? It appears to take 2-3 years for her to gain a British passport and I may have to work in the EU before British citizenship is granted to her.

Thanks, LMIE.

Yes, a Hong Kong Marriage is a recognised jurisdiction. Once married, to live and work in Hong Kong, your wife will need a visa. We can assist on the Hong Kong visa application for you wife and also to advise further on your moving to Europe.

We suggest therefore that you make an appointment to see us and meet with one of our lawyers (call our Ms. C. Wong 2526 1767) our initial consultation fee is HK$2,500. Upon your providing us with further details, we can advise you on the way forward.

Only you register it at your consulate. Otherwise you are still single as per your country. I guarantee that to you.

New Jersey,

I think your guarantee extends to some countries only. It does apply to the Philippines (where it seems to be yet another money-raising idea for the PH consulate/government) but not to Australia.

My wife is also Taiwanese (good choice by the way). Bascially you are best getting married in HK you don't need to register in UK or Taiwan. Infact, if you want to get married in UK or Taiwan then the procedure borders on the insane in terms of what you have to do, especially for Taiwan. When and if you move back to the UK you have to get a settlement via where they look at your marriage to judge if it is real or not, your finances etc and, then your spouse signs a letter saying she will not draw from UK social security etc. After a period of time (I think it is two or three years) then she becomes a UK citizen and has all the rights of a UK person. If you have kids, then they will automatically be UK citizens.

Good luck
