I'm 99% certain it can only play things you can play in iTunes or on an iPod (music, video, and photos).

That includes iTunes content or anything that has been specifically formatted or converted to play in iTunes. Unfortunately, that means no streaming (except directly from iTunes).

I purchased an apple tv and so far I can view my photos and listen to my music/iTunes. However, I cannot watch the shows I downloaded through iTunes. It turns out there is a problem because I am using netvigator/pccw. They protect too much, so apparently, the modem won't let the apple tv have direct access to the internet...anyone else have this problem?? Is there a solution? I've signed a 2 yr contract with pccw...

Hi nettyli,

Your problem is not with netvigator or any broadband service provider in general. If you downloaded to your PC, then you need to pair it with Apple TV, so it can see the content of iTunes on your PC. Because of the Digital Management System in place, you cannot copy downloaded content to another PC. To view content directly from your PC to the TV, I think the only way would be to display your PC screen on the TV using one of the alternative Video inputs of your PC.

And while on the subject about wireless Apple TV, unless you are prepared to wait for ever while it syncs with your PC, you are better off to have both PC and Apple TV hard wired to your router, at least while you are syncing..

the PC and TV are too far apart from each other for your suggestion to work..is there any other way?

Aple suggested I connect the apple tv direct with the PC to authorise it (as this is a one time thing) and then put it back near the TV. But both the PC and the apple TV need to be connected to the internet, and PC only has one ethernet jack

nettyli,

Not clear from your post, I assume you already have a router to connect all the different parts together.

If not, you need to get a decent router. If not mistaken the latest models operate in n, b, g modes. n is the newest and fastest.

My router of choise btw Linksys.

And in wireless mode you will need all the speed you can get, as these videos run into 100's of megabites sometimes.

Once the router is setup to connect to your Internet Service provider the rest is simple.

The setup then is:

1. connect the Apple TV, to your television.

2. Make a wired / wirelles connection of the Apple TV to your router.

3. Have the PC also connected to the router, via wire / wirelles.

4. Using the Apple TV remote, in front of your telly you select the relevant source iTunes library, if you have multiple PCs/Macs at your home you can select anyone of them.

5. Then the Apple TV will copy all the material to the local harddrive it has and you are ready to watch.

If you don't want to wait for the sync to complete, you can still watch the movies if still stored on the PC, although quality might not be as smooth.

thanks greg. already tried the linksys ..but still not working..still cannot authorise

apple hoteline says to authorise the apple tv, it's just a one time thing, so i can take the apple tv to a friend's place to authorise it, but don't know anyone else with one

Went to apple shop. They provide a service team, so a guy came round to check out the problem, and says he has never seen this before: "apple tv not authorised to play content'. He ran tests and called the apple hotline etc etc, but after 2 hrs..nothing. Our next step is to take it to CASE in Times Sq to get it checked out..but I've already ran a diagnostics test and there is nothing wrong with the machine, besides, I can view music and photos, so it does work..to some extent! I just can't view the TV shows I've downloaded

Just a thought.

Could it be some firewall blocking the traffic between your PC and the Apple TV?
