Givng milk in straw cup

ORIGINAL POST

My 10 month old drinks his 2 milk feeds via bottles. All his water is taken via his munchkin straw cup and sometimes a plastic ikea cup.

He drinks water with the straw cup/cup very well. But when I put milk in it as I hope to wean him off the bottle by 1 year, he thinks it's a joke, sips a little and throws the cup aside.

Anyone else with trouble getting kid to drink milk from cup? And how are you doing it...replacing morning feed or bedtime feed first (does it make a difference in the 1st place)? Give half the milk in bottle and half the milk in cup, etc?

Thanks!

HI green,

How old was she when the ba ba fairy came?

Last night, I tried to give some of his bedtime milk in a straw cup but he refused it and insisted on the bottle. It's so ironic because he used to hate drinking milk (1 hour to drink a bottle) and now when I want to wean him off the bottle, he decides that's what he wants.

In a sense, I know it's not as serious as some kids who are like 3, 4 or 5 and still run around with a bottle in their mouths because he's only doing one in the am and one at bedtime. But still would like to encourage the cup. But at the same time, I read somewhere that some kids stop drinking milk COMPLETELY when they are taken off the bottle. That'll worry me too because he still needs the nutrients that milk provides!

have you tried the playtex sippy cups? Bella loves it - and it's got a softish rubbery feel on the cup itself - and she drinks very well from it. I tried milk in the other day, and she took a few sips from it - but not as much as guzzling her water. I do spoon feed milk every lunch if she won't take it from the cup - just to get her used to the taste - not as a liquid sustenance.

green,

think i will like to ba ba fairy to visit my kid before 3 :) but that is a great idea for when the kid is older and needs to be weaned off something else!

HKCC:

maybe i should try the a sippy cup that's got the rubbery top. the ones i've tried at the avent (green plastic spout) and the munchkin one.

have you been giving your daughter milk with her lunch? i read somewhere (probably gina ford) that as the child grows older, we should give some of the bedtime milk during dinner, is that right?

Where can we buy the playtex sippy cup in Hong Kong?

Cheers and thanks!

not sure where in HK. I'm assuming bumps would have it - although can't assure you. I paid a BOMB for it in Korea (about $88 HKD) when it's only about $32 HKD in the US. I was MAD.

this is the one I bought - and paid too much for in Korea.

Our terrible drinker does have good luck with Tommy Tippy Cups - the one that has the thing you bite... hard to explain...

Both they and Playtex are ate B2B, but Playtex is also at many other shops too.

crj,

you mentioned before you will introduce cow's milk when yours turns one? how is that going? does he drink it all from the tommy cups or is it still a work in progress?

bathtime now and we'll try some in a cup before we finish off with a bottle! :)

I started adding whole fat cows milk to his food the week he turned one.

And then started with trying to get him to drink.

But our baby just doesn't drink ... really, only a few sips of water or milk and that is it! He still gets a breast feed in morning and night - the morning one is about 20 minutes and he obviously needs it. The night one is sometimes very short if he ate a lot that day. I follow each one with a few sips of water out of MY glass (made of glass) and he loves drinking his sips from my glass.

He also never really had a bottle more than about 10 times, so he isn't used to the concept I guess.

We try to get him to take a few sips of milk or water with each meal, but it is really hit or miss.

I raised this as a concern with our doctor and he said as long as he is wee-ing and it is clear (not dark yellow and smelly), that he is getting enough liquid and not to worry he will drink more when he needs to.

I have also heard that bottle fed babies tend to 'overdrink' as they are used to sucking on the bottle - so this could be a factor too, that I am comparing him to other babies.

But I want to phase out the breast feed at night this or next week. And the morning one by end of jan/early feb (the date keeps getting later and later!!) I had wanted to wait to be sure he drank more first, but it seems it might just not happen that way.

So in answer to your question:

He prefers to drink from our adult glass rather than any plastic cup.

But he did manage from the tommy tippy thing that you bite and it flows better than any other sippy cup.

We also have a cup with a straw and are going to try that again soon.

Sounds like you are doing great with it all!!

tonight was a disaster.

he split whatever milk that i put in his steady cup. so when i finally caved in with the bottle, he was so frustrated with it all that he didn't have very much...urghhh!!

how much should a 1 year old (or nearly one year old) be drinking anyway? i was wondering if it'll help to give him some milk during his dinner and give a smaller bottle at bedtime and try to increase the dinner milk and eventually phase out the bedtime milk via bottle. Because he does get thirsty when he eats solids...

crj, when you say phase out the bf, do you intend to replace with milk or that's it - just milk during meals?

I think that feeding liquid with each meal is important - just like adults!

WM- I am 7 months pregnant and want a break before the next one comes! And I hope baby #1 'forgets' about breast feeding so he doesn't get jealous of baby #2!! So I want to stop BF morning and night and replace with milk. But this of course means he needs to drink milk... so I am in a mini-dilema as he is such a poor drinker!

I think it is a great habit for a baby/child/adult to drink a glass of water/milk in the morning and again before bed - but before bed to always have some water to rinse out the mouth (when baby can't brush teeth yet).

well i am in a fix too....i want him off the bottle but he'll probably drink almost no milk if i do that!

do you think at this stage, the milk in am and bedtime is for thirst quenchy and nutrients (calcium, etc)...as in it's not actually for hunger? just wondering cos baby eats 3 square meals per day, lunch and dinner is equivalent of 1 commercial jar portion (about 180ml) with fresh fruits. and he has 2 snacks per day, usually some fruit/cheese/rice crackers.

crj, if your baby likes drinking out of a glass made of glass, we have some nice toddler glasses from Ikea, don't know if they still do them, but they were in the kids section, along with other kids crockery and cutlery. It is reinforced glass with a shape that is hard to knock over, and bumps to help grip. But I think 2 months is not long enough for him to "forget" about breastfeeding, even if he weaned tomorrow... suggest contacting LLL for advice on weaning and/or tandem nursing! I know they have lots of books on the subject, and the leaders will certainly have a lot of experience of your situation.

I remember my daughter was also resistant to taking milk from any kind of cup (or bottle). She gradually increased the amount she was prepared to drink from a straw cup as we gradually phased out breastfeeding. In fact I kept up the bedtime breastfeed for longer than I planned, until she was drinking more milk from the straw cup, and this was a gradual process that took a few months of practising every day.

Thanks :-))

He is not a keen feeder anyway, never has been. And I don't want to tandem nurse, so I will still try to get him off before Baby #2 comes. When I sopped previous feeds, he didn't even notice! ha ha. He rarely does more than 5 minutes at night, and the max is 20 in the morning, but when 'daddy' is home (he travels most weeks for work), he does even less as he would rather play with him! So the only thing preventing me from stopping is my own laziness in getting him a glass instead.

I'll check out those Ikea glasses, sounds like a good idea. We tried to drink out of plastic cups to get him to copy, but we were lazy. I think he likes the sound and feel of his teeth (all four!) hitting the glass.

If I struggle more, will contact Sarah from LLL as she has been super helpful in the past.

Hi there,

since I posted this thread 6 days ago, we have only given morning milk in a straw cup. the first few days, he only drank very little and cried each time he saw the cup instead of a bottle. but i chose not to feed the remainder milk in the bottle because babies aren't stupid and would probably hold out for the bottle. so i made up for it those few days with more milk in cereal, yoghurt and cheese.

but today, he drank almost 4 oz from the straw cup! this is a vast improvement. just wanted to show that it can be done! we'll continue with this and maybe wait a month or so before we try it with the bedtime milk, which will probably be tougher!!

Wheelymate - this is great news and very inspiring!!

I have been searching the net for info on what to do when baby won't drink. You confirm what I read here:

http://parents.berkeley.edu/advice/nursing/toddlernocup.html

I tried to give him a glass of milk this morning before his breast feed, and he turned up his nose, made a face, turned away and almost started to cry... urm, didn't go well!

Anyway, you have inspired me, so will keep trying!!

crj,

before he drank his almost 4 oz this morning, he cried too.

but after 12 hours without fluids, he was obviously thirsty. so he crawled around the room for abit but then crawled back to the cup and started sipping it.

:) poor guy!

WM- thank you thank you!

You inspired me to try the cup with a straw we haven't used in ages.

And it worked!

I mixed 1/2 milk and water, made it warm, and he actually drank some... then I did a short BF and he wasn't really that hungry, and he had some more from the straw, then to bed without a fuss!

So I will do this very night this week and see if we can stop the evening feed...

Yeah!

crj,

this morning he drank 3 oz, which is ok because he had a big bowl of cereal with another 4 oz of milk in it.

but the thing is there was no protest. he sat on my lap and sipped from the straw!

keep trying!

Hi,

My daughter is 7 months old and I am not sure if she is getting enough formula.

I feed her 4 times a day:

8am -when she wakes up- formula;

At 12pm she only gets solids - protein and vegetables;

At 4pm formula;

And at 7.30pm cereal mixed with formula and sometimes some fruit. She then has her bath and then, at around 8.15pm (before she goes to sleep at 8.30pm) some more formula.

The question is, is the total amount of formula she gets in a day (about 20 oz) enough??

Also should I feed her differently to make sure she gets all she needs?

Also, I do not give her any water. I have tried a few times, but she never seems really thirsty. should I try to give water and if so, when?

Please let me know what you think.

Thank you so much.

Persistance! And don't get discouraged. Both of my kids had the ba ba until 2.5 years, though I started them on milk in the sippy cup or straw cup at about 1 year old. My oldest was a hard nut to crack and we had wars about the milk drinking until she was almost 4. Since milk is so important, I kept on it. However, since she was about 3.5-4, she drinks her milk up 3x/day with no fuss. Her younger sister was the same way, but gave in much earlier (age 2) and now drinks up without a problem, too. Good luck and keep working on it. One suggestion (start with small amounts in the cup (like a quarter full), as gradually increase as he gets to drinking up with less struggle.
