moulinex - I had one (got it second hand) and it was great. Never had any problems with it until one of the beaters broke. For a simple handmixer it's very good. You'll be able to find it at sogo for sure.

My friend had a Kenwood stand mixer - also all right. I preferred mine for it's functionality though.

The moulinex I had was a four speed - and that was perfect. The kitchenaid stand mixers - going to run you a LOT MORE. You might try looking on the classifieds to see if you can find a mixer secondhand which is how I got mine. ($100 HKD)

Check out Wing On as there are Philips and Kenwood models. There is 1 Kenwood model at HKD320 with the stand and bowl. This is much better than hand held.

I have a handheld cake mixer which I believe I bought at Jusco several years ago. It's a National brand.

While you're at it, check out the various kitchen gadgets (everything you need, really!) on Shanghai st, Yau Ma Tei exit B2.

Make a list though of the items you need, it's so easy to be carried away with all the various baking equipment out there. Have fun!

annebin, thanks i didnt know there was a specialised area. Now i'm excited. only hope the baked goods come out decent. my husband is skeptical and i'm not sure myself... i think i'll start with a cake mixer, bowl and maybe cookie cutters.

Are you using an oven or microwave?

I have a National microwave which came with some good cookies/cake recipes. PM me if you need the recipes.

BTW, a hand mixer should have a 300 watt minimum.

hi claire, why is that? i am right now looking at a moulinex (have no idea what the watt/voltage is)

A lower wattage is a "weaker" motor and, IMO, you would be wasting your money to get one with a low wattage. Also try the mixer out, that is hold it in your hand for several minutes to see how it feels. All mixers feel nice for a fewer seconds but you could find the weightier ones too much of you are holding for a longer time. And also ask to plug it in - some of those things are darn noisy and you want to make sure you won't need to buy some earplugs. This will also let you feel the amount of vibration coming through to the handle. I have found the assistants in Wing On to be, although not knowledgeable, quite helpful and will let you try them out.

BTW, I learnt to bake cakes by hand but my hand mixer makes things quicker. You shouldn't have any problems in baking some lovely things for your family.
