Fish'n'Chips

ORIGINAL POST

Anyone have recommendations for Fish'n'chip shops or restaurants serving good quality (don't laugh) British-style fish'n'chips? The ones at the FCC are fantastic, but I am not a member, so can only ask friend to take me so often, looking for alternative restaurant. Location would preferrably be somewhere on HK Island.

TIA.

Tried the Chippy tonight. The chips were very good though the portion was somewhat small, particularly considering the price, $65-85 depending if you wanted Sole, Perch, Cod or Haddock... perhaps one more middle priced fish in there as well. Batter was reasonable, could have had a bit more flavour or texture, but was far less greasy than any fish I think I have ever had, so that is a definite plus. The fish I had, Perch, because I have never had before, was reasonably good. No strong after taste. Will definitely go back again.

Dot Cod, which I swung by just to see where it was, is far more pricy, perhaps two or three times, and I didn't see fish and chips on the menu with my quick look before leaving. Saw first couple of prices and though even if I do find, will be far more than I want to spend on fish'n'chips.

Thanks for recommendation for The Chippy, will be going back there again soon.

Wow, you are serious about your fish'n'chips!! I could be wrong about Dot Cod, but I recall a friend saying recently that he had really good fish n chips there, maybe I got it confused with somewhere else...

does that make him a "cod-noisseur"?

Somewhat serious, I even worked in a Chippie in England for a day so I could learn more. That day I had fish'n'chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but since each was different (owner was fanatic about f'n'c), I was quite happy.

It is exceptionally rare to find shops that have great chips, batter and fish (there are elements that go into each of these that define the quality as well), usually they are strong on just one of the three, sometimes two, very rarely three. Consistency is also a significant issue.

I don't find it cod-escending to be called a cod-noisseur.

Batter stick with the Chippy plaice, sounds worth it's salt and you heard it from a good sauce. Codsequences could beans gravy if you go elsewhere! Peas come forward if you've haddock better, don't skate around the issue - fry and think.....

I didn't mind the cost so much, as the small portion of chips. The cost, without drink, was $65 to 85.

Restaurants should learn, when you charge $15 or 20 for a can of Coke, you don't sell any, if you charge $5 or 7, you make profit and you sell a lot more of them. We never drank when we went there, and I never saw anyone else drink either.
