Which Gym For A 1st Timer?

Hi Want2bFit,

Not sure if this will be helpful but here's my thoughts...

I'm a member of Fitness First and mainly use the Sheung Wan gym. Honestly, at Fitness First you have absolutely nothing to worry about re being a bit overweight - there is a mixed assortment of sexes, races, ages and body types there.

It's cheaper than gyms like Pure, California, etc. but consquently the facilities are not as new/nice and it doesn't have the nice little touches like the DVD library at Pure, etc.

Although, they recently refurbished and I believe they are getting some new machines in soon?!

I used to go to California in Central (until I moved house to Sheung Wan). It was a bit pricey and definitely more of a show pony/beautiful people gym (in my opinion). Good facilities though.

Really, I would just go and check out a few gyms and see where you are most comfortable. Make sure they give you a thorough tour of the facilities and even ask for one free workout/session so you can test it out. There is thread on this forum somewhere about 'Curves' gyms which seems to have good feedback.

Don't be nervous - most people at the gym are so foccussed on their workout, they don't even see anything else.

Good luck with the fitness kick!

If you are a woman then you should join Curves in Central. I have recently joined and have found it to be a very comfortable place to be, the girls working there are friendly and help you every step of the way. They offer a free trial with no pressure afterwards to join so give them a call I am sure you will love it. Enjoy. You can call them on 2234 9000.

The curves system involves training on the machines initially, and then on subsequent trips there is always someone there to help you and make sure you're using the machines right. The great thing about curves is that you're advised to wear 'what you feel comfortable in' - there are no other people there in tiny work-out stuff, so it's not intimidating at all. Just tracksuit bottoms, t-shirt and trainers. There is a shower - small, but nice, and they give you towels. You need to take your own shampoo. there is a hairdryer. I've been a member at other gyms - including pure and the spa - and this is certainly the only one where i've ever felt comfortable. In terms of assessment, they'll record your weight/inch loss - and give you a members book/magazine with helpful info.

Dear Want2bFit,

I'm just flipping through these pages looking for exactly the hint you were asking for. So I'm wondering if you had some succes in whatever you've chosen to do?

I desperately need to focus on my food intake as well as exercise but besides hoping for every day to be the one to start I don't really hit it off.

Thanks.

Want2Bfit, good for you. You're making the first steps towards your goal simply by verbalising it. consider the web forum motivationtomove .com. The community forum on the 100 Day Challenge has been wonderful It REALLY helped to know I wasn't alone in my ups and downs. And there are lots of 'cheerleaders' who are going through their own 100 Day Challenges.

Chiki, I must disagree with you. it's unfair to simply tell someone new to their fitness program to 'just do it'. Wouldn't everyone 'just do it' if it were that simplistic. A little more empathy please. Notes from someone 'been there done that', it took me almost five years to 'just do it' and not listen to the disparinging voices in my head and waitband, and to learn to ignore those pursed lips from the behind as my large behind flip-flopped on the treadmill.

DeeDoubleU, I'm paying $380 at CaliFit for all-inclusive membership. The $260 sounds like the rate for the restriction to only one gym and perhaps during only the non-peak hours.

Another note about CaliFit, they have a horrible reputation for charging heavier people more. Really honing in on that insecurity thing. They even told a friend of mine that she was too large to do anything in the gym besides treadmill and free weights. She was guilted into paying twice as much as me, wouldn't go to any of the classes, and got bored quickly. So we went roller skating instead.

And I agree with Jem about Curves. but only at this stage of your fitness regime. I've posted additional thoughts on the Curves thread.

Good luck! And let me know if you ever want to go walking. I work out at the Happy Valley race course!

I think it's great we can share so many varying opinions. Want2bFit is going to be able to make a great decision with lots of resources. But no, I fear it's trivializing to put the word 'simply' anywhere near the word emotional or mental. W2BF isn't at the stage of psyching herself to get up and go to her workout, she psyching herself to push past ingrained mental blocks based on societies prejudices. And this society is even worse when it comes to body image and chastisement for less-than-acceptable. So, it's beyond a 'get up and go' according to her post in which she used the words 'desperate', 'shy', and 'dread'.

Highly recommend Philip Wain. I joined their package with both slimming and physical exercise. almost everybody surprised for my instant slim effect after the first 5 treatments ! (i haven't even started the physical classes yet). Amazing technology........No drugs at all. They are a big company so I have the trust with them.

they mainly use various kinds machine to do the rolling on my body where I want to reduce fat. I haven't lost many lbs so it's not just simply water lost. But, the machines can remove the toxin within the lymph nodes and thus the whole body can benefit. Worth a try. Let me know and I can refer my agent to you. They are Professional and they do serve a lot of expats in Lee Garden.

Chiki, it seems you're being a little defensive. I didn't say I knew what she was feeling; rather, I quoted from her directly. Simple use of context clues.
