We are new to HK and would like to have a few weekends away but are unsure where to go. Our children are 8 and 4 so we need something that's kiddie friendly but still of good quality!
People have mentioned Hainan and Cebu but are these suitable and safe places for families? My husband is also a bit of a foodie - so the food has to be v good. Not much to ask I hear you say!
Urgent help required as we would like to do something in March!
Cheers

Last spring the hotel called Gold Coast in Hong Kong New Territory was running a nice deal for HK residents only. It is near a beach, decent restaurants (really nice buffet on weekend nights, and room came with nice breakfast), has a kiddie pool with 2 water slides, kids games, adult sauna. In China, you could check out Chime Long in Panyu, which I would prob rank as a 4.5 star. A lot of HK'ers come there for weekend packages. It has a night circus that is good. White tigers and flamingos inside hotel (in glass enclosures), has a wonderful dinner buffet. It used to have a zoo / safari park, don't know if that has been changed or not, has a bowling alley and other amusements, great big pool with waterfall, sauna and massage, kids would love it.

We can help you if you want to go to Cebu or Hainan (Sanya).
There are direct flights daily to Cebu from HK and the resorts by the sea are a few minutes from the airport. Most passports enjoy visa free entry into the Philippines. Check out

We recommend Plantation Bay. Very nice ambiance and very safe.
Sanya is also nice, but its a bit cool this time of the year.
Other nice places in the Philippines (which is already has warm weather this March) are Palawan and Boracay

We have been in HK for 3 years and our kids are now 4.5 and 2.5. We've been to Vietnam (Hoi An), Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia), Koh Samui (great food if you like Thai), Yangshuo (China). We are also taking then to Beijing in April. All were fantastic and we are both foodies. Be adventurous when you eat. Mix it up with hotel food and local. You can eat safely if you are sensible -ie. watch it cooked before you. Our kids LOVED Yangshuo as did we. Vietnam was fantastic and Hanoi is also apparently very kid friendly. Don't be afraid to take your children to these places, especially if you have good health insurance in the rare case you may need it.
