I've always bought imported meat previously frozen and never locally slaughtered meat from China. I remember ages ago being told local meat is full of hormones and is best avoided. Most expats buy imported meat.
What does everyone else do? Maybe its OK for me and hubby to eat it but not my children.
Thanks.

as baby only eats smallish quantities at the moment, i buy organic meat, veg & fruit as much as possible. but now i am getting more relaxed about what she eats, the older she gets.
for the rest of the family, we happily eat locally (HK) slaughtered meat (pork & chicken). we do not buy any meat that comes from China. for beef, we always buy the imported stuff as i haven't come across any produced locally.
anyone, please correct me if i am wrong but i believe there is a brand (kar-mei) where the chickens are raised "free-range" in HK?, hence the hefty price tag for them ($100-$140 each).

Would it be called Woo Hing Hong (Frozen Meats) Ltd?
I'm going to check it out next week.
Do you buy frozen fish in bulk anywhere?

also you might like to try www.meat.com.hk which is a lot cheaper than much meat available in pns/wellcome and which I have had good quality meat from. I especially love the little chicken drummette things and so do the kids. I think like all things in HK it is a case of having a range of places to choose from.

I noticed that the frozen chicken and pork spare ribs sold in HK are from Brazil (from companies such as Perdigao and Sadia). I know that Brazil exports a lot of agricultural products, but outside free-ranging chickens and cattle, I assume that the Brazilian farmers are also using hormones. Are the hormones used in China any worse than the ones used in the USA and South America?
