Railways in China

I was interested in reading about the recently launched Skytrain to Lhasa. After investigation I have found that there is a service from Guangzhou to Lhasa. The journey takes 57 hours so I was wondering if this would be 2.5 days of hell or are the trains pretty good? Does anyone have any experience of travelling on this route or on long distance trains in China?

Not sure about 57 hours but long distanc trains in China are fine. Go to the toilet early before they over flow and take your own food. If you go 3rd/hard class sleeper you see what everyone else is upto and it's easy to be amused - much easier than shut in your own compartment in 2nd class. Most I've done in one go is 27 hours though...
