I'm looking for a hair stylist who can straighten hair without going for the full japanese-style flat look many local girls seem to have.. Any suggestions? Many thanks.

Hi Kimmy, without boring you with too much technical detail the result can be varied based on the technique used. A stylist still doing this process in the traditional method is going to give you that 'cardboard' hair look which in most cases is not very flattering. Its a combination of heat, direction, lotion and how the hair is actually straighened or smoothed over. There are different strengths of straightening products available thses days also which can make a difference. The best thing would be to go in to a salon (or a few salons) and have some consultations done to make sure your on the same page as the stylist.

I come accross this issue often, specially for clients with fine hair. Of course your own hair type will also dictate the outcome but this should be factored in by the stylist. Do the consultation thing, it is worth the effort.

Tidings, hmmm thats an interesting idea in theory but will have long term problems and is really not a good idea in my opinion. Now lets say you 'body wave' (another term for perm) the roots and straighten the the rest, you will still need to blow dry your roots straight to match the rest and if the rest has been straigtened like cardboard it will never match. A bigger problem is when it starts to grow out, then you will have natural hair, permed hair then straightened hair to deal with. You will have to double or tripple up on your chemical processes to maintain what you started with and your hairs condition will suffer for it.

There are more simple and practicle solutions without adding additional chemical services to the situation.

Tidings, maybe you should try a different stylist or at least go for some consultations. There are ways to do the straightening without having the very flat head effect.

Tidings, the point of a consultation is to give direct views, advice and direction based on each individual. A general consultation does not work as it is not personalised for that specific person, their hair type, needs, lifestyle, etc... It was just a sugestion but if you are happy with your current stylist and hair thats great.

I've had my hair straightened several times and never have the flathead. I always have a consultation a couple of days before the process even though I use the same stylist every time. I explain the look I want and my hairdresser explains whether this will work or not.

Does your hairdresser understand your hair type and what you are looking for? Are they experienced in working with your type of hair?

A good hairdresser should be happy to spend time with you to find out exactly what you want before doing any king of chemical treatment.

Tidings, i dont think tallaluh is lucky at all. As she explains there is a process and she is clear about what she wants. I think it is more that you have been unlucky. I really hope the information on this helps you out.

Tidings, another idea you may want to consider is to have your hair blow dryed out straight instead of ironed during the straighten process. This will leave the hair with more natural movement while making it smoother. Just another option.

D-man tell us what/where to go instead of the endless rambling, my hair is out-of-control as well.

I had a lousy haircut in Guangzhou and the guy offered to hair straightening for 700RMB, but after what he did to my hair should I believe him.

Left my hair dead and dry.

Japanese straightening depends whether it was the expensive or the cheap one.

In Philippines they do fantastic hair bonding (cost around 100US) which I tried a few times, but I live in Japan at that time so it was not practical.

We have no problem with people giving direct recommendations - our only request is that if you recommend your company then please indicate that you represent the company - otherwise it is misleading... feel free to post links to recommended web sites. Generally we will only delete them if they are competing web sites or if they breach the exclusivity agreements we have in place (Santa Fe and Man with a Van)

D Man is right -my hair is not luck, just the work of a professional that understands.

The consultation takes so little time - probably half the time that you spend on this website! A small price to pay for your crowning glory.

Kimmy, I would be happy to do the consultation for you myself if you would like. I can then introduce the right person to do the service and provide the outline for you if you wanted to go ahead with the service.

Agree with Ed.

D-Man, at least tell us where to go, you are not a middleman I suppose.

If you have something about hair, then advertise here, if you are good, I am willing to travel to HK.

BTW, George Lillico, I saw you in TV, something to do with hair.
