Whilst we're on the subject why is it that you have to buy a game when purchasing one of these, you can't just buy the machine in Fortress or Toys R Us?

Totty, it's b/c Sony doesn't make money on the machine, they lose money. So, they make money on the games. And, they assume if you buy the machine, you need a game right? Instead of putting a "fixed" game in the package, you get to choose which game you want this way.
