Can anyone suggest any good, reasonably priced hotels in Penang? I will be staying with a friend for a while so splitting the room is fine, but I will be spending 5 days alone so don't want to spend all my money on a hotel. Any suggestions?

Depending on what you want to do with your 5 days .. beach or roaming Georgetown??
From Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi(beach), >30-45mins. The tour agency or online hotel booking will be able to quote better rates.
Batu Ferringhi beach belt - Hydro Majestic Hotel, Holiday Inn & Golden Sands Hotel.
In Georgetown - Cititel(old part of town), Evergreen Laurel(opposite the seafront promenade and 10 mins walk to Gurney Plaza mall),
Northam Suites ( 15 mins walk to the Gurney Plaza mall)

We stayed at Sheraton and travelled to Malacca by bus, it was long ago, can't remember how many hours.
Five days in Penang would be long in my opinion.
Try the local food and dessert, but be careful.
