I am looking for some good pet shops. We have bought 2 puppies from different pet shops and despite trying our hardest with our vets have had to take them both back very very poorly. We have a dog already at home and would like another one. Does anyone have any suggestions where is good to go?
Our dog is a King Charles Cavalier - we also did find a stray dog who was lovely, but he was just to much for our other dog. Any help welcome!!!
Thanks

None that I would recommend.
If you can read Cantonese, why not buy a dog magazine? They should feature breeders and websites. If you can't read Canto then wait till there is a dog show and contact the breeders directly.
Then check out each site and talk to the breeder. You'll find that if they ask you lots of questions and want proof of ID and address, and want to see the dog later, they care about who the dog will go to and that they have been well looked after.

Its shocking and disgraceful how some poor dogs and cats are kept here in HK pet shops. There should be a law which require such shops to meet certain standards before they can operate. I am surprised that organisations which operate to protect against animal abuse don't do more to deal with such problems.

Hi Beaslel,
Why not check the classified section on AsiaXpat? Perhaps you can find a dog that needs a new home?

Good luck!

All I can say is that our other dog is from the uk bought through a pet shop. Did not have to take him for a health check and has never been ill. We took our puppy back to the pet shop last night after trying everything to make her better -it was just so awful watching this little thing just get any better. The pet shop have said they will take her to there vets and see if they can make her better - I hope they can but I do not hold much hope. Has anyone bought a dog from a pet shop and it has been ok? There should be some kind of law here in Hong Kong, from my own personal experience I would never recommend anyone buy a pet from a pet shop!

So why the heck are you asking?

Thanks so much Claire for your post. Why the heck I am asking is if someone knows of any good pet shops. I have a young son and as you can imagine is very very upset. I have said yes from my own personal experience I would not recommend anyone buy a dog from a pet shop. But all the dogs in Hong Kong there must be some good pet shops around.
Thanks for nothing!!!!

HK pet shops cannot be compared to UK ones. Sick animals abound in them. Who can forget seeing some of those raids in pet shops on tv with the bodies of dead animals on the floor? Perhaps do as Riffraff suggests, or risk disappointing your child again.
BTW, please you can explain why on the other thread you posted:
"Never again!!! "
...yet it seems you are planning to do exactly the same thing again.

I have only ever used this for advice. I will certainly not be using this forum again to get sarcastic comments from the likes of you!!! I have never seen any raids!!

My comments are regarding your unconsistencies. You say "never again" yet are seeking to do exactly the same thing again. My question is why if, as you say "never again". Is one or the other?
BTW, the raids are, in part, why the SCPA and others have been fighting for years to stop pet shops from selling animals.
It would be great if people stopped supporting the cruel HK pet trade by refusing to buy animals from these places. Unfortunately there are still too many people who get carried away by the cute faces in pet shop windows without giving any consideration as to the animal's welfare. What is that tagline? When the buying stops, the cruelty will stop.

I dont really care what your comments are regarding. BTW I have only lived here for 5 months so would not be aware of the raids etc.

Check out this thread, and read the comment from HKVet:

Do check with the SPCA, HK Dog Rescue and HK Alley Cat Watch (They have dogs too!). You are more likely to get a healthier animal, they do have pedigrees sometimes, and your son will benefit from not only getting a dog, but from learning about the process of rescuing a dog too.
You are new to HK, so you wouldn't know, but this is a very heated topic (as you can see from above), don't take it personally, everyone does have the animals best interest in mind which is why so many concerned people are against pet shops in HK. Your experience is all too common (buy dog, dog gets sick, pet shop exchanges, next dog gets stick, and so on)
Good luck, I hope you find a suitable healthy companion for your dog.

Thank you crj for your comments. I think in all honesty it has been so hard losing our puppy and very upsetting all round. Did not know that the HK Pet shops where not good - no one ever told us!! Thanks again

In general Sai Kung is the place to look for pet shops, they must have about 378. However many do not carry dogs, but only equipment. In any case, the town is worth visiting.
And maybe do consider getting a dog from SPCA. There is one in Sai Kung, too.

Ok, really don't want to hear any negativity about this as having a really hard time! I've only posted this to save other people pain.
On friday I bought a British Bulldog pup from a pet shop in Causeway Bay... Maximus. He is adorable and already love him...... He developed a runny nose on monday but other than that is a happy little pup, eating loads, playing, no other problems. Took him to The Ark vets yesterday and am devastated to report the vet said he may well have distemper. I have to wait a week to see if his cold like symptoms improve with antibiotics or see if he gets worse meaning tests to confirm distemper next week.
I bought him from Flag Ship Pet Grooming, Cannon Street. The vet said he may have been vaccinated then just put back in cage with other pups, this meaning he contracted the disease before the vaccination worked. You can assume from this that the other pups have probably got it too. He may be ok, I hope so! But, given how heartbreaking it is knowing my little guy might not make it if he has this disease I would advise that people don't put themselves through this. Go to a breeder and get a healthy puppy, I had wanted a puppy for years and actually felt like i was saving him from the poor conditions in the shop but emotionally It's awful getting attached only to be told that because the greedy pet shop owners rushed his vaccinations to get him sold I may lose him.

The best thing to do when you want to buy a pet shop is arrange with the pet shop owner that you take the pet to the vet for a health check before you buy. The petshop owner should pay for the consultation. My husband is a vet and they do these type of health checks on a regular basis.

maybe you want to consider having a look at breeders from australia or the UK who regulalrly import dogs to hong kong. we brought our dog up from australia where these types of diseases and problems with pet stores are not an issue. I would have a look for breeders or associations for the type of dog you want and see if they will import a dog for you. Its another option, and you are safe in the knowledge that there are strict rules and regulations for these breeders. In saying that, it is a wonderful thing to save an animal in this country and there just seems to be so many animals being abandoned and kept under very poorly conditions. I know the Hong Kong Dog Rescue do an amazing job and the people there really care about the animals and make sure they are as healthy as possible. When we move into our bigger apartment in September I will be putting my name down at Dog Rescue for our second dog.

My wife bought home a very lively cute little pup from one of those pet shops in CWB to and he lasted 18 hours. I dont agree with buying dogs from those pet shops but it was too late when she bought him home. Needless to say I am pretty furious as those shops take no responsibility.
I am hoping to contact other people who have had the same or similar problems with the shops there and stage some kind of protest or at least start to help prevent more sick animals being sold. If anyone is interested to help please let me know.

LC, unfortunately your sugestion dose not work. Even with a written guarantee they are not obligated to do anything. In Next magazine this week there is a story about this with some of the pet shops in CWB. The consumer council has had around 30 complaints on these shops (even with guarntee) and no action has ever been taken.

I completely understand why people want pedigree dogs. In Hong Kong the risk is that the abandoned dogs have not been looked after properly or already have diseases (that have been eradicated in other parts of the globe!). A sick animal brings joy to no one and can devastate a family. A pedigree dog provides that much more security in knowing that a breeder has looked after a pregnant animal and that your puppy has the best chance for a long life. I understand dogs need rescuing and the attitudes towards animals in this country astound me. I think your education about animals is better sent out to the general populous and not an expat forum where as confirmed to me by dog rescue, it is the expats that house the majority of the cats and dogs abandoned.

I have four little sweethearts in need of loving homes. The are HK dogs passed the vetinary check-up, had first vaccinations and absolutely beautiful in nature. This is the mother dog's second litter. I kept 3 from her first litter and they are great dogs. The mother is homeless although many locals watch over her & feed her. She has a nice nature but we have not been able to secure her to get her into our car to take to vet for desexing. Any one with a loving heart please call me Narelle Pamuk (Southside Animal Volunteer Resue) 9199.2340 You do not need to buy from Pet Shops- these dogs are worthy of good owners!

There is no need to buy from pet shops and support this awful cruelty. Check out www.hongkongdogrescue.com

Hi Kalia,
Unfortunately, as I said, we could only find the allergy-free dog we wanted from a pet shop or else I would've also adopted a dog, but a pet shop is an option for some people. i wouldn't have paid the fortune i paid if i could've saved a dog instead. I think it's also a good idea for someone to post a note offering to give a loving home to a dog. maybe someone who doesn't have much time for his/her pet will give it away. of course, the dog rescue is a wonderful organization!!!
