Challenges

Dear All,

I am in final interview stages for an Hong Kong recruiting position. One of the questions they will ask is what challenges do I think I will face and how will I deal with them. Considering I have only lived in the U.S. specifically, Los Angeles and New York and recently traveled to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong alone for personal visit, it is challenging for me to gauge what professional challenges I will face. The obvious are language and cultural.

Question:

Can an expat who works in recruiting and/or otherindustries advise to the challenges you faced and how you dealt with those challenges as an expat living in HK. Preferably the first30-60-90 days.

Many thanks in advance.

longer working hours is of course an additional challenge and being expected to mingle at corporate events to network etc. Thus much of your personal time will be impacted. So its a question of time management and so forth.

Thank you everyone for your insight, I appreciate it. The key takeways are loger working hours. I already work 9-10 hours per day, Mon.-Fri. not to mention frequent after hour responses to business email. What are HK's standard business hours?

You raised an intereting point:

In my line of work, there is a critical requirement to raise questions and discuss every aspect of green field projects we undertake, locals here have a real handicap about asking questions in group environments, this can be very frustrating, counter productive, and it has made it neccisary, that we now only recruit locals that were educated externally of HK/China, with atleast 5 years external work experience.

Do you find it challenging to source and employ foreign talent?
