Unworthy pet owners

Sad as it is...a lot of people "think" they love animals, in fact they don't.

I had a cat when I lived in San Francisco where I lived in a 1,200 sq ft apartment. In HK, I simply find it difficult to compromise the already limited space (I now live in a 700 sq ft apartment).

After very thorough discussion with many many many responsible dog-loving owners here, I've decided NOT to get one until I move to a more spacious place where both my dog and I can live comfortably. I think it's really unfair to the dog if I put him/her in a shoebox apartment.

So for now, I am happy with my stuffed animals ;)

These people should be treated the way they treat their dog for a week or even a month so they know what their poor dog is going through.

BTW, I take my stuffed animals out to...yoga, shopping, restaurants, and walks of course.

It's the ones who acquire a dog because they want something to play with for a couple of hours at night, that really annoys me.

They leave the dog in the house or on a balcony all day and alone so it barks incessantly and disturb neighbours. But the owners don't care because they'll have something to play with when they come home.

Thankfully, most urban estates do not allow pets for that reason, but in the villages it's an increasing problem.

How about the ones who give up their animals because they are "returning to their country"? Is that really a valid excuse to surrender a family cat or dog?

Actually, there are expats who have dogs. We are wise enough to know where to live that is suitable for a dog. I brought my dog here and wouldn't dream of leaving him if we left. Many locals do not know how to train dogs and are in awe when they meet mine. It is really quite sad because it makes those of us with well trained, well behaved dogs have a difficult time getting around. I'm thankful in Sai Kung to have many places to take my dog. He even has a favourite pub that welcomes him to the patio area. But we do walk in fear of the untrained and feral dogs.
