Alllergy from new cream

ORIGINAL POST

I tried a new cream on my baby and her face developed some tiny pimples and red patches. The tiny pimples are also all over her body but they're not red. I've observed her for a few days and the allergy doesn't seem to bother her. I've switched to using physiogel which is a very mild cream but her condition hasn't improved very much. Can someone recommend a good remedy or do you think I should take her to the doctor? Thanks!

how old is your baby? If she is a newborn, it could be just newborn skin which isn't smooth, but rather covered in bumps and pimples for a while.

they say that babies don't really need much on their skin - a tiny bit of soap for bath and they dont' even really need lotion. (although we do love RUBBING it all over them.) Perhaps not applying anything would be the way to go until her condition clears.

If she got hot and perspired, sometimes this will cause pimples in small babies since their skin isn't yet capable of shedding the sweat so easily. Is the rash only where you put the lotion? I personally adhered to the rule of not putting much of anything on mine, especially nothing with perfume or additives. My grandma recommended just use a cotton swab to wipe them down with some mineral oil, she said in the early 1900's people didn't even wash their babies (this was USA). My babies loved me to massage them this way. Anyway, if it's a rash all over including places you did NOT put the cream, then consider either the heat rash idea or possibly if you have introduced a new food that she might be reacting to.

Oh, if she's not in distress and it's not red and inflamed, I don't think you need to see a doctor just yet. I bet it will go away on its own within a day or two. But what you could do is make an appointment for three or four days from now and then cancel the appointment if you don't need it. That way, it will be there for you if you do need it. If it's red and itchy and you suspect an allergy, call the nurse and ask what they recommend. Oh, and that leads to another thought! Sometimes soap left in the clothing after laundry rinse can cause irritation. Try a double rinse to make sure there are no residual chemicals in the clothing.

hi there,

what is this new cream you are using on your baby?

if it's nappy cream, just stop and use water and cotton wool to clean the bottom until it clears out.

as for other parts of the body, unless your baby has eczema or something and therefore requires some sort of medicated cream, 4 mnth old babies don't really need cream of anything kind...

what cream you are using?? not unusual that your baby is reacting to sth in it. very common eso if your cream has fragrances / presevatives. I would stay away from all creams for the moment except a very very thin layer of hypoallergenic moisturiser or vaseline if your baby's skin appears dry. Meanwhile, if u have time, run a search on eczema of past threads and see the many management regimes to tackle sensitive skin.

hi there! I used Johnson's Baby soothing naturals. I only realised afterwards that it smelt delicious! Not good!! She seems to be happy and alert at the moment so I will stay away from any baby wash or creams for awhile and observe her for a few more days. Thanks everyone!
