Do you put a bit of salt to flavour your toddler's soup/food? Was told I should give some to her as she is now older. If not now, when is a good age to give?

I never put in food I make myself because there's salt in bread which she has every day, plus any other packaged foods (baked beans, cheese, quorn etc) that I give her. Plus I feed her whatever I'm eating when we go out so I figure from those things she's possbly getting too much anyway.

we don't use salt at all. like spicegal said, other stuff they eat like cheese and what not already have salt so i think that's more than enough.
we eat pretty much the same stuff these days and i don't always add salt to our share even after taking his out....takes getting used to but it's ok and i reckon much healthier! you can make the food more tasty with homemade stock, herbs, etc without adding salt.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Believe it or not, I found out from my friend who came visiting and had a taste of baby's soup that my helper has been secretly putting salt into my daughter's broth to make it tastier!
Having said that, she doesn't take any of those foods you all mentioned given her allergies ie we don't give her any outside food / jarfoods / cheese / processed items / herbs. She eats purely home cooked meals, even her cookies and snacks are baked by me. Technically, there should be no salt in her fresh chicken, vegetables and fruits.
What do you think?

My pediatrician said after 1 year old, baby's food COULD have a little oil,and salt. However, if your baby is eating well, without salt, I don't see any reason you need to add any. However, my babies are so fussy, so we season their foods in moderation. My baby loves sesame oil. We give a drop into his meats....

if my baby will eat it without, I definitely don't give her with it.
but now that she is eating table food with us, she does eat with more relish those foods that have some seasoning. I'm also a huge fan of sesame oil (the real 100% toasted and pressed - not the mixed one) as it supposedly makes babies smarter. (so says my grandmother.) It has a nice flavor and so my daughters like their food with it in it.
Many cultures start putting seasoning in their food from a very young age - and so it's just personal preference.

I don't like salt (even on chips) so I have never used it in cooking, my husband soon got used to no salt, the kids have all been brought up with saltless homecooked foods. Like the previous posts mention there's more than enough salt in foods without adding it yourself. And there are many, many other seasonings to add to food to bring out the flavour,(my kids like garlic on everything).

witty_han, whilst I agree salt CAN enhance flavour, it can also ruin flavour and usually there is no NEED for it, it's just personal preference.
In my experience, most children 6 - 18 months don't eat from jars - certainly mine never really has done and my not adding salt hasn't prevented her from enjoying tastes and flavours. At 13 months she happily eats "grown up" foods including onion, garlic, chilli, lemon and other wide ranging flavours. She wolfs down curry and chilli, all made by me, and without salt and I personally think my food is tasty enough without!!

spicegal,
i know this is shifting from the original topic but do you have a good curry recipe to share that your girl likes? i want to try it out! cheers.

Hi ladies, well I usually just make whatever curry I'd make for us and maybe tone it down a bit for LO to eat. I started her with Indian Chana dhal, and then saag paneer (spinnach and cheese) both of which went down well. There's a good curry recipe on
http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/babyrecipesforadventurers.htm - we don't eat fish so I use quorn chunks or tofu instead. Start off conservatively and build up over time!
And I also make a pumpkin and carrot thai curry - I do it less firey than normal but it works well because of the sweetness of the pumpkin.
I DO love my spices - and I also love soy sauce, but I don't use it much at all these days!

my 13 month old daughter smells of onions and garlic. Again - it's pretty cultural as Koreans can't live without their garlic. Both girls love that garlic, onion, scallion taste and so I have to brush both of their teeth afterwards. Koreans emphasize again and again the health benefits of garlic, so we're just doing it.

Today there is no salt in bub's broth and gosh, it is tasteless and that is to me, a bland eater. I think a wee bit of salt specifically in her broth wouldn't be detrimental to her health, as like witty han said, the enhanced taste may get bub to be willing to drink more. i plan to get organic salt. any thoughts on salt vs sea salt? we use sea salts and they are very very salty, don't you think?
