Ah - also the David series by David Shannon. It's a bout a mischievous boy who gets into all sorts of trouble - lovely pictures, very little text but funny to boot.

I also like Doreen Cronin books - her "diary of a worm" is hysterical.

Thanks. He is already reading a lot for a 5 year old. Can read the level 2 I can read books. So longer stories would be more welcome than very little text.

My 5 year old boy enjoys the Curious George series of books. These will make an ideal b'day present.

If he is advanced, there are a few Roald Dahl books that are geared for younger readers.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox (which is a fantastic book by the way) and Esio Tort which is just so fun. George's Marvelous Medicine is also another fun one. They'll be above his level, but they are great to read with him so he can see what future reading will bring him.

My (just turned) 6 year old loves The Dangerous Book for Boys by Hal and Gonn Iggulden. It is so much fun, information on morse code, buidling the best paper plane, extraordinary stories, history of the great battles, laws of cricket, knots and so much more. Every little boy should have a copy and it's a brilliant gift.

Thanks hkchoichoi I will check them out. His mom always sits with him when reading so above his level shouldn't be a problem.

@@ Is that one book ? It sounds great.

Doing a search on amazon and B&N - the magic tree house by Mary Osborne keeps coming up. Any comments on those ?

some kids LOVE Magic Tree House.

it's nice because it's a series and if they like them there are a whole slew of them to read.

but by the same token, I've seen more than a few kids get so into them, and used to them they REFUSE to branch out and check out other titles. Frustrating!

It is out of stock at Dymocks (Princes building)- I asked this afternoon. They expect new stock in about 2 weeks.

My son also loved the Magic Tree House books, quite good for that age group as well.
