I am thinking of buying a DVD player to let my kids watch their favorite DVDs in flight. However, I am wondering how it works. Battery? Or plug into the electric outlet in the seat?
I know the problem with laptop.... we can only use battery pack b/c we don't have the electrical plug for in flight... too expensive to invest too.
Is the DVD machine for in flight (portable DVD) the same?

Portable DVD players come with an adapter so that they can be plugged in or run on batteries. Most airlines don't have a plug in the seat ... at least in economy. Typically, the batteries last anywhere from 3 - 7 hours depending on how much you spend on the unit. I bring ours on long flights but take it out only when I really need to.

If I am going to Japan, then the voltage will be a problem. Are the Portable DVD machinese 100-240 capable? Then all I need is the adaptor rather than a transformer.
Is it worth investing when travelling with two toddlers?

Definately worth the investment because I found my youngest would not wear headphones for the plane entertainment but we could play the DVD softly. Agree with k8smum - save it as the last resort for when they are getting ratty as you often don't have enough battery power for the whole flight. Ours only has 3 hours.

Again, I think it depends on the unit itself. Ours is and it came with several different plug adapters as well. Personally, I think it's worth investing in for 2 toddlers. I actually haven't used it as much on flights as I thought I would but it's been great in hotels or staying with friends, on long car rides in Canada (which my kids aren't used to). My kids are aged 3, 1 & 1 just to give you an idea of their attention span.

k8smum, how do you use it in the car? Do you just get them to hold it or is there some sort of table in the market that we can add to the back of some seats? currently my helper holds it for my LO but I really want to start taking my LO out by myself and also am thinking about going back to Aust again just with my LO.

Thanks everyone! My husband keeps saying they WILL NOT watch it as my little ones are so active, they won't sit still for 1 minute. However, we DO have a DVD player and TV in our car, and it's just 1 week since we got it, both of my kids are SO quiet and still now in the car, I sometimes forgot they are at the back. Wouldn't it be the same in a flight? I wonder.....

I agree with K8sMum, but then again I have to:) Handy on the flight, but just as handy on the rest of a trip in a hotel, cottage, car, visiting friends/family without kids (and therefore nothing to play with) etc. As it is a portable unit, it should be multi-voltage but check before you buy.

s1, our unit came with a bag which has straps that allows it to be hung over the headrest of the car so the kids can watch from the back seat. Works pretty well.

My kids tend to fall asleep luckily before any motion sickness sets in but this is the Canadian Prairies we're talking about ... pretty flat country. They get carsick in a taxi here just driving to mid-levels.
