Check the Customs Canada website for everything you need to know. You can find it from the Canadian Consulate General website at www.hongkong.gc.ca under Passports and Services to Canadians / customs / Canadians returning to Canada / Moving back to Canada.

If you've been gone 1-5 years, you need to own and use an item for 6 months for it be duty-free. So, if you still have six months before you leave, get shopping right away. It's up to you to prove when you purchased something and to prove it has been used. Friends of mine returning in summer used an Xmas picture to prove they owned/used a custom-made dining room suite for six months

If you're bringing back any sizeable amount of wine/liquor, check with your provincial liquor board about an import permit as this can significantly reduce the amount of duty you pay.

The biggest thing is to be prepared. Make a comprehensive list of everything you're shipping AND everything you bring with you. You need to declare BOTH upon your entry (not upon entry of the shipped goods). Include as much info as you can such as receipts, value, serial nunbers, etc.

Good luck.

How long have you been away? Be prepared mentally. YOu've changed, met people from all over the world, and travelled a lot, but once you go back home, some people may think you're bragging if they hear about all of your stories! You will find some people have not travelled and they focus on silly gossip and pettiness, but once you travel, it gives you a larger perspective and makes you appreciate things and people more.
