I received an email broadcast requesting mailing address to send me a wedding invitation from somebody whom I hardly know.
I was in Malaysia recently with my husband and we met the fiancee (Ms. X) of one of his business contacts over dinner. Actually, the guy is a sales engineer from a supplier but doesn't even deal with my husband directly. He was just there helping to host the dinner.
Ms. X was very friendly and pleasant. We exchanged email a few times because we are both divers.
She has asked for our address to send us their wedding invitation. The wedding will take place in Bali.
The way I was brought up, it would not be proper etiquette to invite someone whom I had only met once to a wedding. We have no plans to attend the wedding. Any advice from you ladies out there?
What would be an appropriate gesture on our part to the happy couple?
Thanks.

A nice note saying you are sorry you cannot attend, but have made a donation in their name to xyz charity. You wish them the best, and so on...

All you need to do is respond with a polite 'inability'. No need even to make any gift in any direction.
