I'm probably too busy to help, but what is it you need to extract from the drive? Or do you mean you need to remove the drive from the computer? It's a bit difficult to determine what you need here.

What happens when she boots from the OS X install CD? Can she see the HD?

Now you should take the old drive and put it in a cheap external enclosure ($100-$200) then see if you can access the files.
