1081 Service--what's up?

Has anyone else had problems with the information/directory assistance service 1081 recently? I've been told repeatedly that numbers for so-and-so did not exist, or were for FAX lines only, or other nonsense which I knew were not true. When asked politely the operators simply insist the numbers don't exist, but of course they do. Alternative names or spellings don't seem to help. Anyone know what is up? Can anything be done to complain, or improve service?

I don't think this is the case at all; the numbers I'm being told don't exist are numbers I have gotten from 1081 before...and yes, if I'd had my cell phone with me, they'd have been stored there. One way or another, I've managed to get them. It's a case where 1081 operators are NOT giving numbers they SHOULD have.

As to whether or not it's reasonable to believe that, it might be reasonable but it's wrong.

Furthermore, shouldn't there be SOME central directory assistance? The telephone companies operate at the government's approval. Surely it is in the interest of Hong Kong business to have such a central directory, not to mention the interests of the people of Hong kong.

"The numbers listed in the 1081 Directory Inquiries are all of the publicly listed telephone and fax numbers registered with PCCW-HKT Limited. Unlisted numbers that have applied for the Ex-Directory Service will not be shown. This directory does not include mobile or pager numbers."

Perhaps the numbers were once registered with PCCW but the company/person changed phone companies.

I'm sure there are data privacy/commercial concerns as to why one phone company cannot access and publish the phone numbers of another company. A centralised directory might be useful, but who pays for it, who runs it, who owns it, who maintains it, etc?

Yup, there's no one central directory enquiries facility in the UK any more and it's a complete shambles. The Hong Kong system is way, way better, even with the occasional blips. And it's free.
