Baby rolling over

Hello moms and dads!

Our baby girl is 5.5 months old and she has just started to roll over. Now she can roll over from lying on her back to lying on her tummy, but she can't do it the other way around.

We have a little problem - sometimes she rolls over in the middle of the night and she can't get back on her back and she doesn't like to sleep on her tummy so she cries - and we have to get up to re-position her and most of the time I need to breastfeed her to help her to fall asleep.

What is the best way to prevent her from rolling over in the middle of the night? By the way she sleeps in a grobag. I prefer to use grobag as I fear she will kick the blanket over her head and suffocate...>_<

Thanks for your help!

I think you are best to let her learn how to sleep on her tummy if she rolls over and how to roll back - she will do so quickly. By preventing her from rolling over in the middle of the night you are actually prolonging the problem.

Can you avoid the breast feeding though by having hubby go in? Or can you wait 10-15 minutes of her crying before you go in to see if she settles herself?

Lots of tummy time in the daytime and practice rolling might also help.

Do you have a 'transitional' object in bed with her - like a soft rag or toy that smells like you? That can help wonders!

Chrispy, this happened to us too. At first we were gutted -- thought that was the end of sleeping through the night and had to start again from square one! Luckily, once bubs got used to sleeping on his tummy (after about 2 nights) he stopped waking up.

I agree with Crj that the best long term plan is to let her learn to sleep on her front. We tried to keep everything as quiet and fuss-free as possible. Hubby would get up and turn him over gently and then leave him. (I never went to him). The first night he cried for about 10 minutes and we hunched up under the covers feeling miserable. The night after he cried for a few minutes and the third night he learnt to sleep on his tummy and we didn't hear a peep. Now he sleeps on his tummy most of the time -- just like his dad!

I got the wedge for my baby.... it prevented him from rolling over. But by this age, she can roll over if she really wants to, but if she's deep sleep, and rolls unintentionally in her sleep, it would be harder, so she would stay put.

However, if she's rolling over during her sleep, it's because she feels better that way, maybe gas, or just Hot ! My baby now likes to sleep with his butt up in the air, no matter how hard I try to fix him on his back.

Your baby will soon be able to flip back, so it's just a short phase.

I used a baby positioner to prevent her from rolling over coz my baby hates sleeping on her tummy.

Mine rolled over at a very early age, I think when she was 4 months old and she did not have the strength to hold her head up so each time she rolled over, she would cry because she could not breathe. We were also worried of it happening at night when we were asleep. In the end, we put her on a bed and placed two pillows on either side of her so that she couldn't roll over (she kept trying still but she couldn't because she was locked between two pillows).

During the day time, we let her roll over as much as she liked (to practice turning back and strenghtening her head muscles).

When we felt she could do them, we removed the pillows on either side of her for her night sleep.

I see I see - so I should just let her get used to sleeping on her tummy? She did it again last night - she cried at 4am - hubby got up and found her on her tummy - he gently turned her over and left her. She wouldn't go back to sleep and kept crying so I waited for a bit before I went to her - she was hungry - and I fed her for 20 mins. She was still awake after the feed so I put her back to the cot and left her - she was quiet for a short while then she rolled over and was on her tummy again and started squeaking again. This time we just let her squeak (and later she cried a bit) and 10 mins later she went quiet and we found her sleeping on her tummy!

I am giving her lots of tummy time during the day, hoping she can improve her rolling skill so she doesn't have to cry for help in the middle of the night....

Thanks for your advice!! ^_^

Good luck, it really will go fast...

Now you have to worry about her rolling off hte changing table, the sofa, etc... this will be the least of the issues that rolling brings :)
