Has anyone had any experience with those 2-1 washer dryer units? I had noticed them at Fortress and wondered why nobody that I know owns one. (I am thinking to get a washer & dryer but as you know space is a precious commodity in HK).
Any comments?

I have one here in Seoul.
If you are used to the tumble dryers of other countries where the clothes come out all soft and fluffy - you will be sorely disappointed. The 2 in 1's are nothing close to that on the drying option. They rather "bake" their clothes, so their clothes never get that soft tumble dry feeling.
BUT, clothes that are dried in tumble dryer actually wear out faster - what I do with my 2 in 1 here is I wash, then dry for 30 minutes (energy is SO Expensive in Seoul) and then hang dry. In the 30 minutes of drying I sort of alleviate that "Crispy" clothes feeling that you get from line dried clothes, and also loosen up any wrinkles that might be forming. A quick toss on the clothesline and they dry. It gives them a bit of a jump start on the drying process.
but if you are looking for a dryer to take you straight to folding laundry and then putting them away - a 2 in 1 is NOT the way to go.

they are terrible. Takes 5 hours to dry a bed sheet. The amount of electricity it used was horrendous. Also, it washes SO little per load, it was much better taking the load to a local drycleaners. What's even worse is it takes SO long for it to dry, by the time it's dried (the machine stopped), if I don't take it out right away, the moisture gets stuck back in to the sheet, and it has the yucky moldy smell. Then you wash it all over again, or take it out to the sun to dry.... (which made me wonder why I didn't do that in the first place?).... no, go for the two separate machines. My in laws bought a set, dryer on the top, and washer on the bottom, fits perfectly in their little storage closet in the kitchen.
Maytag is the brand. Not cheap though. But excellent!

Loads of info has already been posted about them on Practical if you do a search - so much it will probably take at least one complete washing and drying cycle to read it all.

thanks for all of your comments. THey were all very informative and I am sure that lots of people have learned from your experience as well.
I wanted a dryer that allowed me to minimize the dreaded task of ironing-- but I guess that a 2-in-1 is not the most time-efficient way to go.
cheers!

Cheaper to use a laundry service that will wash, dry iron and fold for you, or hire a maid a few hours a week to do the ironing :)

not to mention that if one function breaks down, the whole appliance isnt workable and is quite expensive to have it repaired

agree with others however if you are in HK and space is an issue for you, the 2 in 1 is better than no dryer at all. If you can fit two separate machines then go for it. Personally I don't like taking my laundry to the laundry service.

just visited showroom they recommended Semens and Taka.
But most of my friends highly recommended one from Towngas, it is just a dryer, but can keep the clothes quality well rather than others!!
