Baby First Solid Food Meal - Recipes and Meatime Schedule

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by bellybutton 19 yrs ago
My bub is into his 5th month and I'm thinking of introducing solids in his diet when he reached the 6th month milestone.

Can anyone share their baby's first food recipes pls?

Also, any advice on mealtime schedule (milk and solids) will be great!

You should get the Gina Ford book for Weaning. She has a very detailed outline of first foods and schedule for milk/solids. Another book which has fab recipes is Annabelle Karmel.

Have fun - its messy but great fun! Don't forget to take pics of his first taste of "real" food.

first foods - are best when kept simple. Steam, puree and keep as much of the nutrients as possible. NO seasoning is also the way I made it.

I LOVE Superbaby Foods by Ruth Yaron. It's a bit hippyish and all vegetarian, but both my girls thrived on the diet and are very very healthy now. your chance to feed your baby healthily rapidly declines as they get older and start to exert themselves.

I have a summary of her book of which foods to introduce when and also a schedule of what foods I introduced to my daughter and some commentary about her eating. if you are interested, I am happy to PM it to you.

I like Gina Ford's book on Weaning as well.

there are no recipes for 1st solids as they are individual ingredients like bananas, stewed fruits, steamed sweet potatoes, rice cereal, etc. get yourself a braun hand held blender, some baby spoons, bowls, bibs and you are good to go!

i echo hkcc's recommendation on ruth yaron and gina ford. i followed ruth yaron for the 1st few months - she is more conservative about foods to introduce which i feel is better because there is no rush to introduce tons of new foods to your kid in the beginning, more important is to get your kid used to the idea of something beyond milk and ensure that there are no major allergies.

but for feeding schedules and for introducing recipes and meat to integrate your baby's meals with the rest of the family as baby is older, i feel this is where gina ford comes in.

check out the books and decide on a plan that best suits you and your baby.

Hi bellybutton,

My baby will turn 6 months in a couple of weeks, so i'm now reading fast books on how to start solids. Would you believe i have 5 of them, but so far, i find the one recommended by HKchoichoi the best (superbabyfood), get the summary from her, she's a genius in making that ;-)

Take a look at this thread... it discusses in depth and I listed out the first meals for the first 2 weeks in detail..

About half way down there is a post on the 'signs' your baby is ready for solids...

Yep, yep, not much to add to the posters above only that HKCC's solids chart is a great help! Definitely got us off to a good start.

We started with Healthy Times rice cereal, then moved onto avocado, pumpkin, banana, sweet potato... Definitely look at Super Baby Foods and Gina Ford's Weaning.

Oh my! You are guys are awesome! I'll definitely grab a copy of superbabyfood and gina ford. My bub has 5 feeding time : 7 am, 10am, 1 pm, 4 pm and 7 pm. He somehow cannot wake up after the last feed for a dreamfeed even though I'm more happy to feed him!

He has a huge outbreak of eczema last week and we just brought him to see Dr Lynn Lim yesterday. Horrors, horrors - he has so many allergic reactions to various food! Have to think very carefully on the solid food that we will be giving him.

HKCC - wld love to have a copy of that summary! Thanks so much!

Hi white -

7 months is still more milk than food. You don't really notice the massive shift until about 9 months I think, although every kids is different.

as for the 3/4 day wait - what it means is after 3 days, your baby doesnt' have any reaction to what you gave, you can give it freely. I tried to introduce something new at breakfast and that way I would have a whole day to see if there was going to be some nutty reaction. And I slowly built it up. My schedule will show you what I did, and I think it may help guide you a bit. I'll pm you! Good luck.

hihi hkchoichoi

you are unbelievable!!! i stared in awe at your detailed spreadsheet! thank you so much!

crj - thanks for the link! it certainly does have superb information..will definitely follow as closely as possible.

Next qn that I have in mind : how much milk should I give my bub after each meal? Should it be the same and up to him to stop if he's full? My little fellow just slurp whatever milk I'm giving him. Right now, he's taking 180ml for each bottle feeding and his last feed is between 200-220ml. I'm just worried that i'll overstuff his little stomach...

initially food isn't anything but "practice." They will eat very little, practice tasting, moving the stuff around in the mouth and generally speaking it's really messy. Although I was breastfeeding and I can't be as accurate as those babies who are bottlefed, I never noticed a significant drop in the milk until closer to the end of the 8 month. When my girls were finally on 3 meals a day, then there was a gradual drop - but dont' worry about it too much. If your baby is full, generally he wont' eat.
