Looking for advice on choosing the perfect birthday gift for my soon-to-be one year old. Daddy's gonna get him trike. I am so lost with all the options. He's a very active and curious boy and I'm thinking of something that will encourage his creative/imaginative skills and keep him entertained... something like an art easel... but not sure if it's the right choice for a 1 year old. He doesn't care much for soft toys. But loves to take apart all things mechanical esp. TV remotes! He has lots of books and CD's and lego etc. I've been to Wise Kids in TST and Toys R Us. What are the other good kid stores in HK?

do you have the little touch leappad? IT's touch sensitive, has a number of different "books" you can add in and it's great for little kids...it doesn't take the place of a good book, but it definitely has a learning aspect - cause and effect. (if I push this button, a sound goes off.)

Or, instead of toys, you could get something to help organize them visually for him. A friend got my girls bookshelves for their birthday - and they loved to see all the options in their room - they could point to what they wanted.

or, the most useful (although maybe not as fun gift) is a deposit into a college trust fund. When family asks me "what does your baby need" I say nothing, and when they say "I want to get them something" I say, "Please put money into their 529 Savings account." Both girls have a sizeable chunk of change in theirs already - and hopefully it will continue to grow so I won't have to worry too much about paying for college tuition - it's not to far away for my older one. (15 years to save...)

The trike is a big enough present, make it from both of you, plus maybe a couple of small things like first crayons, a book, a bath toy.

The money in an account is a good idea too.

Thanks for the suggestions. The bookshelves are a great idea. He loves standing on his toes and poking around in our book shelf so he'd be delighted to have his own.

Any ideas which shops I can look at?

simple bookshelves - ikea - they have a great ="cubbyhole" one which is about 9 boxes in a 3X3 formation. You can put wheels or not. I thought it very functional and nice.
