Reading recent stories about Thailand I want to ask those who are more in the know - is it safe to hire a taxi off the street in Bangkok and hire them for a day to go to Ayuttahya, drive us around and back in the evening? I am going with my mum and hubby won't be there - so no boy to feel safe.
If taxis could be dodgy (don't want to end up visiting tailors etc), are there any reputable companies which won't break the bank but will provide a reliable driverv / car?

Preferably, don't hire taxi off the street for a 2 hrs ride to Ayuthaya, better be safe.
You can book a day ahead:
- hotel car with driver thru the hotel travel desk, but it will be slightly more expensive as they will use a better range of cars
- OR if using a taxi, then inform hotel concierge to enquire & negiotiate the price for 1 day's taxi and to inform you what are the extras that you need to pay (eg. tolls). Request the conceirge to call the taxi and you have a look at the taxi before confirming, since you do not want to have an old taxi for the whole day!
Optional- an extra 100 bhts(about HKD24) for driver's lunch.

Normally when I’m travel to Bangkok with people that haven’t been there before I include Ayuttahya as part of our itinerary.
I usually arrange a hotel car for the afternoon. Travel to Ayuttahya, have a look around the ruins then some shopping at the street market stalls a bit of lunch then head back to Bangkok stopping at the Summer Palace on the way. This makes for quite a good day out.
Different hotels have different rate, but I normally use the car for around 5-6 hours, check with your hotel for car hire rates.

The first time we went to Ayuthaya was on an organized tour. We took the first part of the journey by car and back by boat. It was fun to see how people live by the river.
Recectly, we have used a taxi for day trips around Bangkok. The driver is an independent lady driver with a good and clean taxi. She speaks some English. Drop me a line if you like to have her details. Our 3-year old daughter was very found of her.
