Has anyone flown with Vietnam Airlines and if so how safe is it?
Thanks

Whilst I usually take CX where I can I'm also happy to fly VN if necessary - and have done so quite a few times. Although it does remind me of the very first time I flew HKG/SGN about 8 years ago. Was sitting in business class with a clear view of the flight deck door when I saw what appeared to be smoke seeping under the door followed by what smelled suspiciously like tobacco smoke. And just then the door opened and the driver or his mate emerged to spend a proverbial penny, carefully stubbing out his cigarette before he completely exited the flight deck. We couldn't stop laughing. It was a very apt introduction to Vietnam which has provided many other great laughs (and many frustrations, too) since that time.

If the pilot is relaxed enough to have a smoke, cant be all that bad eh :) ??

That's one way of looking at it, but also relaxed enough not to follow rules. Today smoking on the plane, tomorrow putting the landing gear down before hitting the tarmac!

btw, if you're asking people here "how safe is vietnam airlines", don't you think you're asking the wrong people?
clearly, anyone here would be a 'survivor' ..

Have flown them a number of times...actually there not bad, certainly better than some domestic airlines in China! Your biggest challenge is when you land (assuming you have made it that far) and getting through immigration. Time it wrong, like I have on a number of occasions, and expect to wait hours, no toilet break, no coffee just chaos!!!

...and don't even think of stepping even one centimeter out of line to see what is causing the hold-up. Because if you do it will coincide with the immigration officer's head turning to the side just at that moment, seeing more than just the one person at the head of his queue, and standing up ordering everyone into a single line before he sits down and resumes his miserable service. Actually, last time I arrived here (HCMC) a couple of weeks ago it was remarkably quick and well-ordered.
