American Overstayer

I overstayed by a DAY.

and then went to Macau and I was pulled aside - and they definitely noticed.

I also had to pay a fine plus something else - I don't remember.

I was also separated from my husband (who had a valid visa but I did not) and they wouldn't let me call him or anything.

But the whole thing took about 20 minutes and after paying and explaining what had happened, I was free to go.

Nationality shouldn't count for anything. An American should face the same penalty as a Filipino - and vice versa. If your freind had hurt his back he should be able to get a doctor's report to that effect as that can be acceptable as a reason for not renewing etc. But did he really have a bad back for 6 weeks? Methinks he's got some serious explaining to do - and so he should.

i overstayed my working visa (accidentally) by a few weeks.

i went to the immigration department, explained it, they asked me to write a short statement (actually the immigration staff told me what to write) and all was fine.

took about 20 minutes and the staff were polite and helpful.

oh, and a week in jail.

.

.

just kidding (about the jail bit)

Go to immigration ASAP, as HKSoul said, they will scold you, advice you to write a letter (dictate it to you) that includes your sincerest appology to the Director of Immigration for your clear breaking of HK law... they will then either extend your visa or take appropriate action.

While HK Immigration might be 'hours in hell' to some, it is actually very efficient and if you are friendly and polite you will find they help you a lot.

Call their hotline and stay on hold for a while to speak with someone first for advice, and they can tell you what floor/window to go to.

Many people overstay and get arrested, with either fine, jail stay or both. So best to try to resolve at immigration ASAP.

Ironic that the HK authorities are so lenient.

What happens if you are from HK and overstay in the US!!

HK = Efficiency

Australia/US(I assume) = something else entirely ..

I agree. HK Immigration is so bloody efficient. You get spoilt. So hard to stand in other lines. But then... I don't know the rate/ no. of immigration applications to the US vs HK vs Aus.
