Sand flies at Kota Kinabalu?

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by hotwheels 18 yrs ago
Just booked a holiday and am now worried about the earlier posts about the 'run down Shang Gri La and the sand flies on the beach'!!!

We are a party of 5 (with kids) so am quite worried now - is it that bad?!

Thanks

Would say 'tired' (in places), rather than run down. We went in June, when there did not seem to be a sandfly problem.

Thanks for that. Too late to be worried now since we are all booked and have to look forward to it !

Looked on another site and understand it has been/ is being renovated but travel agent actually insists that it is ALL completed now.

Hope it will be wonderful , and will post the verdice here after Easter!

For my children, I use nutmeg ointment as a natural mosquito repellent.

You may want to try this if you encounter sandflies and see whether it works.

Just dab on parts of exposed leg/arms and it should last about 2 hrs. It can come in ointment/gel/oil form.

depends on which shangri-la you are going to... rasa ria or tanjung aru.

Hi just to say the Shang Gri La Rasa Ria was good, a bit tired as ABCGG said, but that was not a problem because it was clean and the bathrooms were kind of refurbed (but no fan in bathroom so it gets really steamy!)Staff were OK but that friendly and not half as efficient as Hong Kong.

The beach was great and we enjoyed it thoroughly-no sand flies but they had a big notice up near beach warning about flies and telling people to use tropical insect spray.

There is little entertainment (some singing pms) but OK as we were not looking for a rowdy time. Only thing that would stop us booking is the slight problem with food. Out of our party of 5, 4 of us had stomache aches after the food on 2 occasions (we stayed 6 nights) We put it down to a a problem with the room service food on one occassion and the other was a problem with a beautiful (but deadly!) jelly kind of coconut dessert. So a bit disappointing from a five star hotel. Everyone was fine after a dose of medication.

Otherwise a great place, lots to do, just be careful at this time of year for jellyfish in water (my son got stung but a bit of vinegar from the life guard did the trick)

We will definitely go again but maybe try another hotel for variety, but nothing wrong ar Rasa Ria - just keep away from desserts because they are not kept cold with ice!

Make sure you bring loads of sun tan lotion and after sun bcos the resort is really expensive. Also take your own bucket and spade bcos they don't sell them there unles you go to KK town!
