business selling baby stuffs

Finally the time has come where I am itching to do something more than staying home to care for my 18-mo old. I don't wish to return to my old job as it is demanding and I deal with dangerous chemicals and radioactivity (worried I will bring contamination home). Rather I am considering a baby shop focusing on western-looking clothing ie no funny bows and cartoons and baby products from overseas downstairs of my residence (many new shops for lease), targeting medium price range. I once went to Singapore and Malaysia and couldn;t believe how lovely yet how cheap the clothes were.

Would like to pick all you mummy brains as to (1) whether you think it's viable business; (2) what kinds of baby products eg clothes, feeding accessories, skin products, you can't buy here thus need to get from overseas; and (3) would you bother to travel out to kowloon side, Clearwater bay, for shopping?

Please do totally honest with your advices. Many thanks.

I don't know - it's hard with Stanley in the picture in HK. If you want to get the non filly, no nonsense Western style stuff, it's just a trip right there. I don't know if you can really make a dent in that market.

Another friend and I were racking our brains for great baby ideas - and eventually came to the conclusion that it isn't lack of product on the market anymore - there is something for everything - it's getting the more innovative idea out there that makes a business work. Something innovative and service oriented was easier to come up with than something product oriented, unless you had invented something amazing.

Good luck - I understand the itch to do something...

i agree with HKCC, the market seems slightly saturated and you are not the only sahm that is itching to do something related to the little love of your life.

seriously, in singapore, what i feel we really need is a relaxing cafe with a very good and safe outdoor playground for kids. it should be perfect for mums to sit close by (if the kids are big enough to play on their own) to the playground and have a cuppa and cakes while the kids play. and if their kids are just cruising or just walking, the playground should be big enough to accomodate parents in the playground. and weekends, a brunch menu or something with a decent wine/beer list so that daddies can come along too. ample space for pushchairs, baby changing area, etc...

sounds like such a logical idea but i can't actually think of a place like this in singapore, can you believe it! there is a restaurant that supposedly boost an indoor playground and i know some hotel brunches set aside one function room for supervised kids play but there isn't anything low frills but offering good fun, food and a good dose of sunshine!!
