Just started solid so basically just offering very small amounts of puree. Do you reheat the food in microwave or cook in a pan? Is it safe even though cookware is not sterilized?

reheat - do you mean food that you have cooked and then frozen in ice-cubes?

if so, what you can do is a few hours before feeding, trasnfer the required amt of ice-cubes from the freezer into a clean bowl with a lid and put in the fridge. it will thaw nicely by then and you can heat it up by placing the bowl over a larger bowl of hot water for a few minutes.

you can also use microwave but be very very very careful about hot spots, make sure you stir properly and ensure it is cool enough for baby.

I don't know if this is true (and there are so mmany conflicting reports) BUT my doctors office once sent a flyer out explaing how many nutrients are lost in the microwave process.

After buying and spending hours cooking organic meals for my babies I was horrified to learn I could have been feeding them cardboard!

I hope it's not true as the microwave did make defrosting and reheating so much easier.

there is so much debate about the effects on microwave that i don't know anymore!

that said, i think it's really important to reheat food super well especially when there is meat involved so microwave seems to provide the best option, which is what we use!

Thanks. Question for WM:

1) when placing the defrosted food into a clean bowl - the clean bowl's got to be sterilized or not? Or it's exactly the bowl you are going to feed baby with? (Sorry I really wish to know in detail)

2) how long does it take to warm the food in a bowl of hot water? Is it as fast as heating up liquid e.g. milk? (sorry but I'm a complete cooking idiot)

the reviews on microwaves are mixed and varied. And also inconclusive. There are some alarmists out there I think, but to each his own.

I used it every day for my kids.

the only thing was that I never heated anything up in a plastic container. I always used glass.

you don't need to sterilize your bowls for food...

hi nicher,

in my opinion (on hindsight now that kid is almost 13 months), once you introduce solids, it's impossible to sterilise all the cutlery and utensils used to prepare and feed baby food. but i understand your concerns because i was concerned initially! so what i did was i bought spoons and feeding bowls that specified it was suitable for sterilisation in the steam steriliser. brands like tommee tippee does that i think.

but after awhile, i thought it was unnecessary so i stopped. also, some of the stuff you use can't be sterilised, e.g. ice-cube trays so i just scald it with hot water before using. i also make sure i wash everything in hot soapy water and i always give the spoon and bowl a good splash of hot water just before use.

amount of heating time - it really depends on the amount of food! if just one icecube of food, i reckon it will be very quick! sorry, i'm afraid i don't actually have answers to that!

hope this helps!

I've never sterilised bowls and spools but have been lucky enough to have a dishwasher which which gets things pretty hot.

i was going to say if i had a dishwasher, that would be ideal as i am sure the cleaning process will make everything else hot and clean!
