High doses of vitamin C for toddler?

ORIGINAL POST

My 2.5 yr old is recovering from Bronchitis, still coughing, and the ped suggested taking anti biotics. I thought I should perhaps try giving him high doses of vitamin c instead but I've never tried this method myself or on my child. Has anyone tried using this method succesfully on a small child? How often and up to how much? Thanks for any feedback!

if your ped is still suggestion antibiotics, it would imply that there is still an infection to be cleared up with the antibiotics. if you start antibiotics, you always want to complete a full cycle instead of interrupting it, otherwise you can have a huge relapse and actually make it worse.

But I have used vitamin C also with my older daughter.

hi hkchoichoi, I haven't started the antibiotics yet. I just thought perhaps vitamin C would do the trick. But often and how much should I give to my son? Did you give the powder form or pill form?

I'm not a doctor, so I don't want to give any advice.

But with my daughter, if she was definitely suffering, a lot of congestion, heavy breathing, lots of mucous - and the doc told me antibiotics - I would do it.

but right now, she's running a bit of fever, but isn't too out of sorts, so I don't lower the fever and give her lots of OJ and 300 mg of vitamin c. (tablet form.) Oftentimes this does the trick for me - but I do consider my daughter having a very good immune system.

If your doc told you antibiotics - I'd probably go with his judgment. I know that we have this idea that they are over prescribed - and often times they are, but if it is an infection that can be cleared up quickly with antibiotics, it may be a good thing.

Hi jingaling -

in case you want an argument AGAINST giving your child antibiotics in the case of bronchitis - I found this article.

http://www.drgreene.com/21_646.html

this is the excerpted passage which is most pertinent to you.

Bronchitis

1. Regardless of how long it lasts, bronchitis or a nonspecific cough illness in children rarely warrants antibiotics.

2. Occasionally, if the cough has lasted for more than 10 days and specific bacteria are suspected, one round of antibiotics may be worthwhile. Children with underlying lung disease (not including asthma) might also benefit from antibiotics when their diseases flare up.

Thank you all for your information. But does anyone know where can I get pure vitamin C powder? I found some that comes in 1000 mg packs yesterday in Nature Village on 38 Lyndhurst St. as a post had suggested. But it has a whole bunch of other vitamins in the powder such as magnesium, B12 etc., so not sure if I can take them in large doses.
