Baby's weight

ORIGINAL POST

My 2 month baby boy weighs 15 pounds, measures 62cm. So he falls into the big baby category, it seems. He feeds on 4.5 ounces of milk every 3 hours. The paed says he is not overweight, weight to height ratio is alright. But I'm still worried that he is risking to be overweight.

does anyone out there knows of a good baby dietician? is there such a thing?

would be good to hear anyone who can shine some light on the subject of a healthy baby weight.

Both of my babies were on the big side when born and were on the highest centiles here in HK but now my eldest is 3 and he's not the slightest bit overweight.

Like Cara said try not to worry he sounds perfectly normal and healthy.

If he's feeding on breastmilk, there's no cause for worries. My bub feeds on breastmilk and when he was 3 months, his weight is way above the 95 percentile and the paed cannot even record on the chart!

Also, you should not worry if the paed is not concern. Babies are smart. They'll know when to stop eating when they are full. So please, don't put your baby on a diet!

Thank you for your responses. Yes, this is my first child. I get paranoid sometimes. Is there a baby weight/height chart to look out for?

bellybutton, my baby has stopped feeding on breastmilk, after the paed diagnosed him to be allergic to lactose. He is now on Lactose free milk (OLAC).

I have a qn. When is eating considered too much. I am still pretty worried. Sometimes, my baby will need to feed within 2hours. There have been occasions where he is overtired, and feeding seems to be the only way to settle him. Is this advisable?

My baby is now 10 weeks old and is able to down 5 ounces of milk at each feed.

top 2000, usually a lactose intolerant baby will have a pooh pooh almost immediately after each feed. (at least that was my baby's situation). The pooh is watery and comes in quantity. Quite similar to an adult who is lactose intolerant.

top2000, as a rule of thumb, watery pooh is not good. "happy pooh" is soft and moist. Not watery. It should not be diarrehae. I take it that you are breast feeding. Best to visit your paed. Monitor how many days have he been having the watery pooh. Sometimes, if the baby is fully on breast milk, watery pooh may not be such a bad sign. But best to check. Good luck. My paed too said that lactose intolerance situation will subside as the baby gets older, past 3 months. lactose free formula is not as complete as the normal formula. Hence, it is not advisable for a baby to be on lactose free formula for too long.

Healthy babies, just like adults, can come in all shapes and sizes - a baby in the 3rd percentile can be just as healthy and normal as a baby in the 97th percentile. What health care professionals are generally looking for on a growth chart is that baby stay relatively consistent in their growth pattern and continues to meet developmental milestones.

Growth charts are only one part of the puzzle, however, and must be evaluated along with other factors, including:

What size are baby's parents? What were their growth patterns as babies? What about baby's siblings or other family members? Genetics plays a large part in baby's size, so don't ignore it.

Is baby gaining consistently, even if it's not on a curve?

Is baby meeting developmental milestones on or near target?

Is baby alert, happy, active?

wow - i have the opposite probelm to germaine. My baby's gaining steadily, but is a bit on the slow side. He's only gianed a bit more than 3pounds in 2 months.

He's happy, alert, feeds well, sleeps well, poops well, seems content and is not fussy...... but i can't help but be a bit anxious.

Will take him to a pediatrician tomorrow just to check all is ok.

Hi ruth, do you know of a lactation consultant?

Germaine - my baby pukes ALOT when he was like 1-3 months after each breastfeed. I slowly realise that it's some of the food that I've been taking that he's allergic to. E.g. cheese, cow's milk and cabbage. So, you might want to do a quick check on your diet and the feeds that follow after each meal. When I ate pizza, gosh! He's puking like a singapore merlion!

Agree on getting a second opinion. However, I don't know of a lactation consultant in HK. I do visit Dr Lynn Lim to perform an allergy test on my baby, which confirmed that he's allergic to diary products (but he's not lactose intolerant). I can pm you her clinic's address if you are interested.

Just persevere in bf, you are doing a great job!

Try Louise or Hulda at Annerley - they are midwifes, not purely lactation consultants, but very good.

If you really want just a lactation consultant, then Sarah at La Leche League is FABULOUS, so down to earth and really great at both explaining things and making you feel calm. She also works at Matilda as a Lactation Consultant on the maternity ward a few days a week.

Also, Matilda Well Baby Clinic now has an appointment only breast feeding clinic every Monday, which is much cheaper than having someone come to your house - but you need to make an appointment and you get a whole hour!

Thanks for all the replies. Most helpful. I am worried given that lactose free formula is not as nutritious.
