Gripe Water

Baby is 5 weeks old and has really bad gas/stomach wind after every feed. We burp him in different position lots, sometimes upto an hour, but baby still cries with tummy pain. Tried Infacol Windrops prescribed by doc, but doesn't seem to help much. Has anyone tried Gripe Water? Have been told it works really well & quickly, but am worried baby is too young for it? Would be grateful if anyone can share their experience on this?

I can testify to the Gripe water. The Infacol was ok, but the Gripe water made my son burp like he downed a couple of beers! It really helped us and relieved him. I used the kind you can find at B2B (forgot the name, English brand). He started taking it around 7 weeks.

We went to the US for CNY and ran out of the stuff, was so worried we couldn't find any. Well, went to the local health food store and found some, it even works for adults too, all natural ingredients. Thank goodness! My in-laws had never heard of it and were surprised at how well it worked.

Good luck, a gassy baby = very unhappy baby & parents.

Thank you simplythebest for the thread tip, found it really helpful & reassuring. DaniR & Cara, thank you for the testiment, I think I will give it a try. Just one question, how do you administer gripe water? Instructions says 5 ml by teaspoon, but baby is too young for a spoon? Do you give it directly into baby's mouth via suction drop or add into his milk? He's on formula. Sorry for being so clueless, pls help.

mumbloxy, my baby boy suffered the same problem. Infacol did little to sooth him. 5 weeks is not too young for gripe water. While it is best to give it directly into baby's mouth, but when I tried with my baby, he choked. I gave it to him in his bottle, adding a slight amount of water. I don't think u should add to his milk. You either feed the baby before or after his milk, not during.

I used a syringe also, administered it before his feed. Slowly push the syringe or else they will choke.

Use a syringe/dropper but administer into baby's cheek. Then gently blow into baby's face. Instinct will cause baby to blink but also swallow. Works great!

No not too young for gripe water it is aimed at very young children as often these problems go by the time a child is 4 months old. You can also try holding an infant upright for 30 mins after feeding then lay them down on a bed that has a slight incline i.e. you place a folded towel or blanket under their mattress at the top end so the the top of the torso and head are elviated slightly as often they suffer alot when they are lying flat. You may notice this that they sleep well when held but as soon as they are put back down on a flat surface they begin to struggle again.

Fennel is a seed used in cooking, esp Indian food. It is also offered at the end of an Indian meal in a restaurant, often covered with candy. It is also called anise and tastes licorice-y. It ought to be available in any grocery store that sells Indian spices or in the large supermarkets at a higher cost.

Hi...mine suffered from bad colick the day she turned 3 weeks...gave her gripewater and infacol.....gripewater really helped.....though i didnt give her 5 ml...i gave only 3 ml and gave it by dropper.....

if u r trying infacol u should try for atleast a week continuously to yield results... but dont worry about gripewater..u can give it at 5 weeks....

Ladies, gripe water is pretty much fennel - you can get it in B2B but I found with mine two that Infacol (again B2B) was doing a much better job.. good luck
