Hi, I've recently arrived here and hold a full UK driving licence. Can I use this in HK or do I need to exchange it for a local one? Thanks..

If you are living in HK you will need to get a local licence. You can only use your overseas licence for up to 3 months. It is a simple process of going to the transport department in admiralty and aplying for a local licence and paying the fees. You dont have to give up your UK licence to get a HK one.

Just an advice here, I would not recommend that you drive in Hong Kong shortly after your arrival here. The challenge/difficulty of driving in Hong Kong (regardless of how many years of driving experience you have) is that you have to know the roads well AS A DRIVER, not as a pedestrian or a passenger in a vehicle. Looking at the signs are not helpful because by the time you see them, you'll probably miss a certain exit or it's too late to turn, cut lane, etc. Also, drivers here are very aggressive.
I think you'll understand what I mean once you start to drive here. The local licence will cost you $900 and it is good for 10 years. Good luck!

I agree with AYM on the signs. To drive here you need a good general sense of direction because the place is so small you can't really get lost. You need to be prepared to just go with the flow and not stress out if you go the wrong way. To start with don't drive anywhere if you are in a hurry. The stretch from Central through to CWB is the worst especially if you get stuck in the queue for the tunnel- the rest is pretty easy.

I agree with Saikunga, get on the road ASAP and have fun getting lost. As for difficulty driving and signs, you wont be any worse than the local drivers who have been on the road for years and still ignore the signs and road rules.
