I am thinking of moving to Lantau - Mui Wo.
Any advice, comments, tips? What is the Silvermine Bay hotel like? I am thinking of staying there for a while to see how I like it.
Thanks in advance

Hi Redblue
I moved to Mui Wo late July last year. It did take some getting used to in the beginning but once I got used to getting around by push bike, I feel as if I am in heaven. I notice there are people who go everywhere on foot, so I guess it's not a must to use push bike. It really depends on your personal preference and lifestyle.
Unlike Cheung Chau and Lamma Island, it is very tranquil and spacious in Mui Wo. It doesn't get overly crowded and noisy even on weekends and public holidays.
As far as the mix of people goes, there is quite a number of journalists, artists, writers, lawyers and NETs who live here.
Some might think it is an awful long ride to Central on the ferry, ha ha, it takes slightly over 30 and 50 minutes on the fast and ordinary ferry respectively. The bright side is you'll never get stuck in the traffic on this leg of the journey.
Stay at the Silvermine Bay Hotel while you take your time to check out Mui Wo is a brilliant idea. Here are a few things to do while you're here:
1) Take a walk to the waterfalls (there are 2 of them)
2) If you enjoy trail walking, it's an easy one-hour walk to DB from the far end of the beach
3) Take it easy and relax on the beach
4) Visit all the different villages. Rent a bike from Bicycle Shop (next to HSBC)...it's much easier to get around with a push bike.
By the way, I would suggest you come spend some time here on both weekdays, weekends/public holidays so you get a better picture of how Mui Wo is like.
After all, enjoy the nature with plenty of fresh air, trees, birds, undomesticated buffaloes and cows gazing on the open fields...if you are more of a nature person, Mui Wo can be the right place.
Welcome to Mui Wo.

Mui Wo is a very nice and relaxing place to live. However, if your work is not in Central or close to it (close in terms of MTR stations), the transportation is extremely inconvenient.

Regarding transportation, quite easy & cheap to get to TST by Star Ferry, and there are a few buses serving Admiralty, Wanchai and Causeway Bay. Very fast and cheap.

Thank you Sylvia after seven years of living in the city I am looking for a slower pace of life in a place where people have the time to write an email and send pictures just to be helpful!
A warm welcome indeed! I am going to try the hotel for a week or two and I have a feeling I am going to like what I find.
Thanks again

Hi redblue,
there are a lot of people here who can work from home, or are semi retired etc. I have been here over 15 mths now and love the place. If you are into hiking/trail running/mountain biking then the surrounding area is great. Push bikes are only necessary if you chose to live in one of the surrounding villages(generally more space, roof tops and gardens) but are a fun way of getting around. There are some nice flats in the main blocks around the centre of Mui Wo so you have the choice. You will get used to carrying a ferry schedule in your pocket and there are plenty. On on a night out in town you have options at 1110, 1150, 1230 and 0300 so again your choice. I came out here to get away from the noise and bustle of the city(and of course it is much cheaper for same or more space). I am lucky that I only need to visit the ofice in central occasionally but even when I have a client across in Kowloon or further I prefer to put up with the journey to get back here to my house in the village with neighbours I know and BBQ on the roof. The silvermine hotel is fine unless you are unlucky enough to be descended upon by a large, noisy and rude tour group staying at the same time.

There is a restaurant couple shops next to 7-Eleven, oh, I can't even remember its name 'coz all the locals call it the "Turkish Place."
And then there is a restaurant which serves pasta and pizza...locals call it the "Pizza Place."
Both serve good food, good serving size and are very reasonably priced.
bon appetit

Bahce is the turkish place and they have live music on Friday nights...the owners are so nice and the food is great! As for Lantau, I have lived here for 2 years and have loved every minute of it. We moved from midlevels to save some money and just though we would have to "endure" it, but it has been heaven. We don't live in Mui Wo, but down the road a ways in Tong Fuk. Check out our website www.tongfuk.com and you will see what a great community we have. I was truly surprised to find this in Hong Kong! Good luck with the move, I hope you enjoy S. Lantau as much as we all do!

If you come to the ferry pier at Mui Wo there are kiosks with details of lots of holiday homes/flats around Mui Wo and Silvermine Bay, they rent by the hour, by the day and by the week. I do not know the prices unfortunately.
