Hi, Have been looking at the other threads but everyone here seems to be either a dependent (ie married) or have (potential)working possibilities.
I am neither, and looking to live here anyway.
There are several possibilities for me: I was thinking of starting my own business here, and have to look into that but in the meantime am thinking of teaching English, independently. Another possibility is to apply for a student visa, since I would actually like to study here, but that visa is so restricted - working would be out of the question, I believe....
I have also been checking out the ID website, and am still no wiser. What would be the best course to take?
Basically, I just want to reside here legally with my partner, and without having to rush to Macau every 3 months, and if the opportunity arises, do an odd job here and there - I will not have a employer sponsoring me in any case, because the industry I used to work in is very small (art) and cheap.
Any advice?

I came out here in the same situation as you after a transfer fell through and my partner had already secured a job.
I spent all my savings in a couple of months(easily done in HK), did some English teaching and finally managed to find a job in my industry, after over a year of searching.
It depends on what you want to do over here, teaching English is Ok, but it's pretty competitive and you need lots of contacts and the qualifications/experience to back it up if you want to make a serious career out of it. Plus the hours can be long - evenings and weekends.
Maybe someone else can give you some advice about being a student or setting up your own business, as I don't know enough about those visas.
If you want to post your e-mail address, I'll send you some details of my experience over here and some advice.
Alternatively you could get married, but that would just be desperate!
